4.6 Health and Safety Committee

The Board of Governors is responsible for ensuring that adequate arrangements are in place for the health and safety of students, staff, visitors and contractors while carrying out business associated with the institution or on its premises.

The Board of Governors has approved a Health and Safety Policy which sets out the responsibilities of all individuals according to their role.

In accordance with good employment practice, the University has established a Health and Safety Committee which includes membership of the recognised trade unions, Estates Management, Human Resources and the Health, Safety and Environment Officer.  The Committee is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor  and it meets three times a year.

Health and Safety is a standing item on the Chief Executive’s Team’s weekly meetings. The Committee’s minutes are presented to the Chief Executive’s Team to ensure that, within the budgetary envelope, enhancements to current practice, training and equipment are prioritised. Regular reports on health and safety and environmental sustainability are made to the Governors’ Strategy and Resources Committee.

The Committee’s minutes are also presented to the Joint Consultative Group.

4.7  Strategy, Risk and Projects Group

The Strategy, Risk and Projects Group (StRAP) was established in 2011 to succeed the former Senior Managers’ Forum, the Risk Management Group and the Services Liaison Group. The purpose of the StRAP is threefold:

  • To oversee the timely implementation of the University Strategy and to assess the effectiveness of mitigating actions
  • To identify new risks that should be included on the University’s Critical Risk Register and to assess the effectiveness of mitigating actions
  • To oversee the successful implementation of cross-institutional projects

Membership includes staff responsible for the delivery of Strands within the University Strategy. The Critical Risk Register is a sensitive document and is not therefore available publicly. The Governors’ Audit Committee receives copies of the StRAP Group minutes to support its role to ‘understand the key business risks and to keep under review the effectiveness of the risk management, control and governance arrangements…’ (Term of Reference 6.2). The Governors’ Strategy and Resources Committee and the Academic Board also receive the minutes of the StRAP Group.
