With some 6000 staff and students and two campuses, how we travel to and from the University is a hot environmental issue. Vehicles are responsible for local congestion, air pollution and contributing to global warming. The University wants to do all it can to reduce these impacts and improve the quality of life for those on campus, our neighbours and benefit the environment.
The University recently developed a sustainable travel plan that promotes greener travel options. Our goal will be to reduce the number of vehicles on campus and increase the number of journeys made by sustainable means.
Cycle to work scheme
The University supports a cycle to work scheme. This enables staff to purchase a bike and cycling accessories tax free using a salary sacrifice scheme. So you can cycle to work more cheaply, save money by peddling past the petrol station and get fit in the process! The University has teamed up with Cyclesolutions to run the scheme. The scheme is open 3 to 4 times a year and is advertised on this website as well as Portia announcements.
Discounted Staff Travel
University staff can now apply for discounted tickets on Stagecoach. This provides a 10% discount through Stagecoach’s Megarider scheme. Staff interested in taking advantage of this offer should download the Megarider form and once completed forward it to Stagecoach who will then issue tickets. Although you will not need to provide proof of employment when the ticket is issued, you may be asked to show staff identity card by a bus inspector whilst travelling.
