House Rules

Back to: Homepage / Living in Residences
House Rules summarise aspects of your contractual obligations which concern safety and behaviour in residences. This includes the Code of Conduct and Residential Licence information. They reflect the minimum acceptable standards of behaviour we would expect of University Residents: in essence, they are about respecting the rights of others.
Code of Conduct
Members of University of Chichester are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a manner appropriate to the academic atmosphere of an institution of higher education.
- Consideration for others in the Halls of Residence should be exhibited at all times.
- Noise should be kept to a minimum. Loud music which interferes with the well-being of others must be avoided. Particular care should be taken at night, when maintenance of an atmosphere conducive to sleep and late night study is essential.
- Communal areas must be maintained in a fit state for their purpose. In particular kitchens must be kept clean and tidy.
- Study/bedrooms must be kept in a fit and habitable state.
- Due attention should be given to the safety of residents, particularly through the adherence to Fire Regulations. Security precautions must be followed and doors to halls must be kept locked at all times. Entrance codes to residences and/or keys should not be given out to non-residents.
There is a system in operation under which students in breach of the Code of Conduct or who repeatedly commit other disciplinary offences will be subject to a fine. In serious breaches of this code and/or residential licence students will have their licence terminated and may also, through disciplinary procedures, be expelled from the University.
Residential Life
ACCOMMODATION OFFICE If you have any queries concerning your accommodation the Accommodation Office can be found at the bottom of our Bishop Andrewes Halls of Residence, near the Chapel. information will be requested by the Accommodation Office via the Wardens e.g. dates you will be staying on campus over the Christmas and Easter holidays etc. It is important that any forms are completed and returned by the required date. |
BALL GAMES For health and safety reasons ball games and similar pastimes are not allowed on any of the open areas adjacent to the halls or in the hall communal areas. Playing field areas should be used if you wish to play ball games or similar. |
BICYCLES Bicycles must be left only in cycle sheds or parking areas provided. You should take reasonable precautions to ensure the security of your cycle, which is brought onto campus entirely at your own risk. You are strongly recommended to insure your cycle. Under no circumstances may cycles be stored in halls since they may impede the evacuation of the building in the event of an emergency and is prohibited under fire regulations. Any cycles found inside halls will be removed immediately. |
CLEANING OF YOUR ROOM A cleaning schedule is posted in your hall. The cleaners only have a limited time and are instructed not to move anything in your room and will only clean areas they can reach. You can assist by leaving the room in a tidy state so that they can access all areas. If any activity in your room, or in communal areas, causes the need for additional cleaning you will be asked to do it. If such cleaning is not completed in a reasonable time residents will be billed for the extra work necessary. Art Students are advised that only preparatory work, drawings and water colour work is permitted in the residences and all work must be retained within the confines of student bedrooms. You are not permitted to use Oil, Acrylic, Plaster or Charcoal in the Halls of Residence. |
DAMAGE TO YOUR ROOM should there be any damages you will be charged for repairs, unless someone else admits responsibility and is willing to pay. All residents are deemed to be collectively responsible for any damage to communal areas. It is in your interest to prevent other residents or visitors from causing any damage. Accounts for any damage must be paid to the finance office. |
FINES Students behaving in an unacceptable manner by breaking the Code of Conduct or other rules outline in the Residents Handbook will be seen by a member of University staff. Normally, on the first occurrence a written warning will be given. However, for serious breaches of the Code and for subsequent occurrences a fine may be levied. The student has the right of appeal to the Vice chancellor, who may cancel, lower or raise the fine. Unpaid fines will be regarded as a debt to University of Chichester. |
FIRE PRECAUTIONS You are expected to comply with fire precautions at all times and should familiarize yourself with fire alarm break glass switches, emergency routes and the location of fire fighting equipment in the hall. The removal of, or tampering with, the fire fighting equipment of the misuse of any other device installed to provide protection against fire are criminal offences under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Particular care is needed in residences:
|
FRIDGES Residents are only allowed to have a fridge in their room on medical grounds. Permission must be obtained from the Accommodation Office in advance. |
HEALTH AND SAFETY In the interest of your own and other students’ safety you are not allowed to burn candles or joss sticks or store any flammable liquids such as kerosene, lighter fuel, petrol, BBQ lighting fluid, methylated spirit, paraffin etc in student residences. (This is not an exhaustive list and refers to any substance with flammable properties.) For this reason we insist that aerosol products are kept to a minimum and away from heat sources. |
KITCHENS You will have access to a kitchen for the preparation of light snacks and drinks. An inventory of the contents will have been checked by your hall warden. Please ensure that all items remain in the kitchen; it is advisable to keep personal items in your room. It is a joint responsibility of all users to keep the kitchen tidy and in a hygienic state and not to wedge the kitchen door open. It is your responsibility to wash-up items immediately after use. Should cleaners be unable to gain access to the sinks because of unwashed items, these items will be removed. If kitchens are persistently found in an unacceptable state the dirty items of crockery will be thrown away and any replacement costs charged to the users of the kitchen. Please avoid using the kitchens to prepare food at unsociable hours, for example the early hours of the morning, unless necessary on religious grounds. Basic cleaning equipment is kept in the kitchen for emergency use by students who use that kitchen. |
MISCONDUCT Students are subject to University of Chichester disciplinary procedures for conduct incompatible with acceptable social behaviour. Misuse of fire protection systems, persistent noise, petty larceny (e.g. of food/milk), unsatisfactory care of rooms, unauthorised overnight guests, serious disrespect shown to Student Wardens and University Staff are all instances of unacceptable social behaviour. Drunkenness and disorderly behaviour, together with any acts of vandalism are not tolerated at University of Chichester. Any student held responsible for misconduct will be fined and may be asked to terminate their residence. For very serious cases a student may be suspended for varying periods of time. Misconduct concerned with theft, weapons or the possession, use and supply of drugs automatically become matters where we consider involving the police. (See University of Chichester’s Drug and Alcohol Use Policy.) |

Parties should end by 11.45 p.m. to allow the premises to be vacated by midnight. Your Hall Warden and the Head Student Warden should be notified in writing beforehand of your intention to hold a party. As with visitors in your hall, you are responsible for your guests. |
PETS You are not allowed to keep pets of any description in your room. |
POSTERS IN YOUR ROOM Please confine any posters or similar displays to the pin board area provided. They should not be fixed to other areas of walls, ceilings or doors since this can cause damage to the fabric of the room and create a fire hazard. |
SECURITY, MAINTENANCE, ACCOMMODATION AND CLEANING STAFF These staff act with the authority of the University and must be accorded due respect. Their legitimate instructions must be complied with. |
| SMOKING Smoking is forbidden in ALL halls of residence. If you wish to smoke please do so outside and away from doorways and windows. Smoking of illegal substances is banned and will be treated as serious misconduct. (See University of Chichester Drug and Alcohol Use Policy.)

TELEVISIONS If you have a television set in your room you must licence it yourself. Our licence is only allowed to cover television sets in teaching accommodation. Your home licence does not cover your set at University. |
UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOUR Please be aware that a fining structure is in force for behaviour which the University considers unacceptable. Please see the fine grid on the back page of this handbook. |
VISITORS You are responsible for your visitors and should ensure their safety. Visitors must behave in a manner acceptable to the hall community. All guests must leave Halls of Residence by midnight for security reasons. Friends visiting occasionally from a distance may stay overnight for no more than two nights but must not sleep in communal areas. To comply with Fire Regulations visitors in this category must be signed into the hall on the list provided by your Student Warden. In exceptional circumstances it may be possible for a friend to stay for more than two nights but prior permission must be sought in writing from the Accommodation Office. A charge will be made for such stays. Please note that should your visitor wish to keep a car on campus overnight there will be a £10 per night charge. A permit can be purchased from the Conference and Accommodation Office. |
WARNINGS If your room or communal area in your halls of residence are left in an unacceptable state you will be given a warning. If the situation has not improved within 24 hours, a second warding will be given, after that a fine will be levied. |
WASTE Students should dispose of waste appropriately. Please do not leave sharp objects, broken glass or bodily waste in the bin. |
