You will be able to sign up for internet connection in your room upon arrival at University or by going into the Conference and Accommodation Office on either campus during office hours.

Scope

The internet service from University residences provides a general internet service with some restrictions. Through this connection you will be able to gain access to the range of University systems and services that have a Web interface.  These include ‘Portia’, for access to your email and course pages, and also SONAR for your academic record information.

Please note that, for security reasons, peer-to-peer file sharing will be disabled on this network connection.

The connection does not provide access to the range of University-licensed software such as Microsoft Office and other specialist packages.  If you wish to use these packages on a personal PC or laptop you will need to purchase your own licence.  In some cases the University has access to favourable deals on software; please enquire for further details.

Please note: for security reasons, peer-to-peer file sharing will be disabled on this network connection.

PC/Laptop Specification

Please note that, for security purposes, the network connection will work with the following operating systems only.

We only support:

  • Windows 2000 with Service Pack 3 or above
  • Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or above
  • Apple Mac OS 10.3 or above.
  • Windows Vista (provisional - still being evaluated)

Other systems may be connected via freely available software but support for this is very limited.

Your PC or laptop should have a 10/100mbps Ethernet card installed – these can be purchased relatively cheaply from PC shops.

If you require advice about setting up your PC or laptop for use with this service please contact the Student Helpdesk on extension 6475 or email studentithelp@chi.ac.uk.

IT Assistance

The Student Helpdesk will be able to assist students with setting up their machine and with the process of downloading the required service packs and security patches.  Please note, however, that the University cannot supply upgrades to operating systems.  For example, we cannot upgrade a student’s PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP.

The Student Helpdesk staff will operate from the service points in Room G11 in the Learning Resources Centre, Bishop Otter Campus, and from G1 in the IT Centre, Bognor Regis Campus. They may also call the Helpdesk on 6475 (BOC) or 2107 (BRC). The hours of service are from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays only.

Computer Code of Conduct

Users on the internet service are required to comply with the University’s Computer Use Code of Conduct, just as they are when using University-owned computers. Please note that the University reserves the right to disconnect any users who do not comply with this code.
