TV Licence

Back to: Homepage / Living in Residences

If you would like a television set in your room, you must obtain a TV licence for it yourself. You can find more information about this at http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/

All our en suite accommodation have TV aerial points, however standard accommodation does not. You will be reliant on whatever reception you can obtain from your own indoor aerial – and this will vary according to where your room is located. Our general advice would be to test the reception in your room before buying a licence.

You also need your own licence if you are sharing a house with others and use a TV in your room and your room is subject to a separate tenancy agreement. If you are unclear about your tenancy status please contact the Accommodation Office for advice. However, if you have a separate tenancy agreement but there is only one TV being used in a communal area, then only one licence is required. Equally, if you are sharing a house with others and use a TV in your own room but the house is considered to be one place shared by all, then only one TV licence is required (a joint tenancy agreement would usually be evidence that the house is a single licensable place).

Students can get cash back for the summer

TV licensing understand that most students leave university during the summer, and if you're not using your television, you won't need your TV licence. Provided you don't need your licence again before it expires, you can claim for any completely unused quarters (three consecutive calendar months, e.g. July, August, September).

Most students would therefore need to buy a TV licence at the beginning of term in September in order to allow enough time at the end of term to qualify for a refund. Remember to buy your licence as soon as you need it, because leaving it late could prove costly.
