BA (Hons) Children and Families

Develop and explore the underpinning theoretical perspectives and research with children and families and make coherent links to employment with access to a wide range of modules offered by our Childhood, Social Work and Social Care departments. Engage with a wide-ranging multi-disciplinary programme that will inform, challenge and benefit you in your own understanding of children, young people, families and communities, and in your own academic and personal development. Complete a placement as a volunteer to allow you to make links between theory and practice and prepare for employment.

Course content

The BA (Hons) Children & Families programme is designed to prepare students who wish to research or work in the field of children and their families. The programme has been developed to ensure that relevant and up-to-date teaching, learning and research establishes you as an effective and successful independent learner with the knowledge and skills that are needed in today’s workforce. We have worked closely with local employers and key stakeholders to ensure the subjects covered within this degree align with the key priorities within the sector.

The degree will ensure that you can respond to the current changing environment by drawing on a strong theoretical perspectives and linking this to practice and critical reflection. In addition to the subject specific knowledge you will gain we will be developing your key transferable skills such as critical thinking and analysis, problem solving, presentation skills (both orally and in written form), ability to meet deadlines and individual and group working.

This degree will provide you with a wide-ranging and coherent multi-disciplinary programme that will inform, challenge and benefit you in your own understanding of children, young people, families and communities, and in your own academic and personal development. We aim to recruit students from diverse communities in order to facilitate a shared and creative learning experience to promote your understanding and commitment to social justice, your respect for difference and your ability to challenge oppression.

You will develop an appreciation of an inclusive, equal opportunities approach, a commitment to entitlement and an appreciation of anti-oppressive practice. We will support you to develop a knowledge and understanding of the work of different professionals engaging with families and their children. You will also take a diverse approach to study which empowers you to work both independently and in groups towards specific goals.

Our facilities

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.
At the Bishop Otter campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.  We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.
The Learning Resource is the hub of the learning environment.  It has two upper floors of library resources, one for silent study and one for quiet study, both of which have recently been refurbished. On the ground floor, you’ll find the Support and Information Zone, Media Centre, Otter Gallery, Costa Coffee and a variety of IT resources.

Where this can take you

You will develop your knowledge of theory and research relevant to children and families in order to gain a critical, comparative and analytical understanding of a range of social and individual issues related people’s lives. The degree offers you practical working experiences as a volunteer that will enable you to: 

  • Develop your skills
  • Develop your commitment to inter-professional working
  • Understand how to meet legislative requirements
  • Understand how to assess and plan for the needs of different family members
  • Understand the importance of the ‘reflective’ practitioner.
  • Ultimately it will enable you to develop the capacity to learn by encouraging a socially-aware, self-reflective, self-critical approach to learning and practice which will prepare you for employment or further study.

The programme explores childhood, families and service provision across a range of sectors from a multi-disciplinary and inter-professional perspective Future careers could include direct work with children and families (such as children’s centre, local authority, youth work), lead onto professional qualifying programmes (such as the MA (Social Work) or Initial Teacher Training), further academic study (Masters or PhD), careers as a health professionals working with children and families or in a people-oriented employment.

 

Indicative modules

The programme considers the diversity and complexity of family life and the experiences of children and young people. Year 1 will provide you with the theoretical framework which will give you the academic grounding for your degree. You will study topics which encompass the socio-economic, political and cultural dimensions of working with children and families, including core modules such as safeguarding, diversity and communication skills. In year 2 there will be a range of core and optional modules which cover relevant contemporary issues such as social pedagogy, health, babies and research methods.

During this year you will be asked to complete 60 placement hours in the voluntary sector to assist you to make the links between theory and practice. Year 3 also contains a range of core and optional modules such as supporting vulnerable people and partnership with families. In addition you will complete an independent research project on a topic of your choice, this will allow you to draw from your growing theoretical knowledge and complete empirical research supported by a supervisor and will have the opportunity to complete an additional volunteering placement.

Teaching strategies

The BA Children & Families has been designed to offer you a range of dynamic experiences where you will learn about working with people across the age ranges. Taught by experienced academics this programme will guide you through development of theoretical, practical and applied skills. Examples include individual tutorials, lectures, group exercises, directed reading, role play, observations, discussion and presentations. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will offer you pastoral support and over time you will gain the understanding and confidence asked for by a range of public, voluntary and private sector employers. You will undertake work placements to support your learning and develop your experiences in the field

Assessments

There are a variety of assessment tasks integrated with the learning and teaching which will ensure that you are given relevant and meaningful activities with specific outcomes. Many of your assessment will expect you to draw on your experience and work-based activity. Examples of assessment include:

  • Observations and analysis
  • Evaluation of given case studies
  • Critical review of literature on a specific topic
  • Group and individual presentations
  • An interrogation of theoretical and research-based evidence
  • Pod-casting, emails and discussion boards.
