BA (Hons) International English Studies (IES)

Our BA (Hons) International English Studies is specially designed for students for whom English is not a first language and can provide integrated language development and study throughout your degree Programme.

The BA (Hons) International English Studies (IES) means you can:

  • Begin your undergraduate studies with an English level of IELTS 5.5* (minimum in all 4 components) by combining your chosen subject with International English Studies on a three year Programme
  • Focus on language skills for academic use and/or personal language development
  • Tailor your module choice to your personal needs as your use of English improves

*Applicants with lower levels of language proficiency should see our Presessional pages as it is possible to undertake our Presessional Programme in preparation for entry to a degree programme.

Student view

Masahiro Sumikawa
Business Studies and IES - Japan
I decided to apply to the UoC because of the location, but realizing that I could get as much supervision and help from my tutors as possible, because of small number of students in sessions (compared with other universities). I am pleased with my choice. I could study both English and Business while surrounded by supportive people like tutors, and people are quite friendly. Combining with IES also helped me to improve my use of English at the same time as studying my Business subjects, especially in things like discussions and academic writing. I could get some tips from IES and use them in my other classes. I would make that choice again - with no doubt.

Teaching and assessment

International students are special to us, and students from a wide range of over 40 countries are welcomed into our friendly University community.

You will be among a diverse group of students who have chosen to come to the University of Chichester because of our teaching reputation, the range of courses we offer, and the support we provide in a friendly and safe environment. Also, you’ll be in a superb location on the South Coast of the UK.

We take great pride in the rich learning experience we offer our students and we are proud that we have been delivering education since 1839.

As we are one of the smallest Universities in the UK, we can guarantee you will not just be a face in a crowd: when you come to study here your tutors will know your name, you will quickly feel part of the university life and get to know many new people. We don’t have large lecture theatres: there is a more intimate feel with an emphasis on students working in smaller groups in seminars and workshops.

We specialise in offering individual and tailored support to international students. The programme provides integrated language development and study throughout your degree Programme.

In addition to International English classes you also receive:

  • Individual tutorial support (3 hours per semester), to help you plan, carry out and check your coursework in your combining subject;
  • A special international orientation programme to welcome you to University;
  • Dedicated international advisers to help you with issues such as visas, opening a bank account and generally settling in to life in the UK;
  • Social events to help you integrate into the University community and University life.
