BA (Hons) Event Management and Tourism Management

Our programme strikes a balance between the academic context and the applied operational elements of event management. The applied approach to teaching is facilitated via an event volunteer programme – direct engagement with the event industry to provide you with first-hand experience of event management. Adding tourism modules to events allows students wanting to go into a career in the fast growing travel and tourism industries to learn how to plan sector specific events.

I knew selecting Chichester was right for me as soon as I attended an open day. The lecturers have all worked in industry and provided us with first-hand knowledge. You also get to know them very well, I wasn’t just a number. Running my own event in the third year gave me valuable hands on experience. My course also gave me a huge number of transferable skills that I have now been able to use in a marketing and events environment.

Course content

The programme strikes a balance between the academic context for events, and an appreciation of the applied operational elements of event management. There is an ‘applied’ approach to learning and teaching, via direct engagement with the event industry. In doing so, the programme takes advantage of the enviable opportunities presented by the scale, wealth and diversity of events in the local and regional area including the Chichester Festivities, Arundel Festival, Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival.

Specific elements of the teaching programme are delivered by event management professionals. A parallel event volunteering programme, run in conjunction with local event providers, also provides students with an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of event management. We offer a supportive learning environment and we take great pride in the quality of support that we provide to you. Emphasis is given to smaller group sessions, and modules are designed to be active and experiential so that the skills and knowledge you develop can be implemented in a realistic setting.

The first year of the programme shares much in common with other business and management programmes, and is designed to provide a solid underpinning in business-based subjects. During the second and final years of the programme, you will be able to demonstrate your acquired knowledge and skills through the conceptual planning, design and implementation of two major events.

Our facilities

Our facilities content

You will undertake your academic work in small group workshops housed in one of three Georgian mansions with state of the art features including touch screen electronic white boards and high speed WiFi. All of our current students love the learning environment, the culture, camaraderie and the fact that tutors know them by name so they are more than just a 'face in the crowd'.

Event Management students have the opportunity to deliver events at stunning venues across West Sussex including the Sussex Cricket Club, Hollybank House in Emsworth, Duncton Hall and Hotham Park where every year our students deliver our signature event, Rox in the Park. The Dome, which houses stunning conference facilities, is the venue for the Green Oscars Awards Ceremony, which our second year students organise as part of the Green Action Scheme. Other facilities on this dedicated university campus include the latest books, journals and online data in a truly modern library, and IT centre, a student zone complete with Costa Coffee, a gym and much more. If that's not quite enough for your needs we are just across the road from the beach and the beautiful Hotham Park - brilliant for creativity and inspiration.

Teaching and assessment

Our approach to supporting your learning, and how your learning is assessed, is designed to enable you to become a confident and enterprising graduate.  It is focused on seeking to support your ambitions, in parallel with ensuring that the needs of employers are met.  With this in mind, key features of our approach to learning and assessment include the following:

  • In place of the more traditional large group lecture method to teaching undergraduate students adopted by most University Business Schools, our approach involves tutors working with relatively small numbers of students at a time.  As well as providing an excellent environment for supporting you in the development of your subject expertise, it also helps you to develop a wide range of soft skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management.  These attributes are highly valued by graduate employers.
  • Opportunities to work with organisations on current commercial/business problems and projects.  These experiences are used to provide the basis for assessments that enable you to apply your learning within authentic commercial situations.
