BA (Hons) Marketing and Tourism Management

Tourism is a cornerstone of Visit Britain's wise growth strategy, part of the national strategic framework for tourism. Our degree is designed to equip you with the relevant knowledge and skills to engage in effective dialogue and partnership working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and sustainable approach to tourism development.

Course content

Starting with an underpinning of the marketing mix in the first year, with assessment based on real life marketing problems, students continue their studies with modules investigating the psychology of consumer behaviour and the contemporary world of branding, before analysing the components of digital marketing strategies and choosing whether to specialise in areas of sports, luxury or not-for-profit marketing. To complement your marketing learning you’ll also have the opportunity to undertake studies in key business areas such as human resources, accounts, law, research skills and business decision making.

In your final year, the final year modules in global marketing and integrated marketing communications are studied alongside your management report, prior to undertaking a marketing internship for 10 weeks or 2 optional taught modules.

While sustainability in tourism is not a new issue, our emphasis on theory to practice is designed to ensure you become highly-qualified with sound academic and vocational experience to drive forward the wider sector adoption and implementation of sustainable tourism strategies.

Teaching and assessment

We believe a hands-on, interactive and participative workshop approach to learning with modest group sizes is the most effective way to develop the types of skills that employers look for in graduates.

Each module you’ll undertake is usually supported by a weekly tutor-facilitated workshop of approximately 2.5-3 hours. Group sizes are typically 20-25 students.

At the end of the workshop, you’ll normally be tasked to undertake intersession work that then feeds into the next workshop. Our approach encourages you to be proactive and offers an environment that’s well suited to enabling you as a student to share your thinking and explore different ideas.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods, including essays, examinations, project work and presentations and seminar discussions.

Modules are assessed at every stage of the course, offering cumulative assessment of your progress. Your academic advisor and lecturers are available for advice throughout your degree.
