Graduate Destinations and Labour Market Information

Graduate destinations

You can get an idea of Chichester graduates' destinations through the link on the Uni Services page on Portia. This information is collected each year as part of a national survey detailing graduate employment and further study destinations at approximately six months after graduating. Because this information is collected at such an early point after graduation it does not paint a particularly valuable picture of graduate careers.

Research that has looked at graduate success in the labour market a little further on shows graduates getting to grips with their careers and engaging in more challenging roles. One of the most interesting and thorough examples of this is Seven Years On by Peter Elias and Kate Purcell, published in June 2004.

Labour market information

Labour market information (LMI) can be a useful tool in researching career ideas and investigating the supply and demand side of the labour market. Like economics it is good at describing what has happened but less reliable at pin pointing what will happen.

With LMI it is always important to check the source and validity of the information. For example some graduate LMI focuses exclusively on a small percentage of traditional graduate employers - the kind of recruiters you'll see in the glossy directories outside the Careers Centre.

A useful source of Labour Market Information is: www.prospects.ac.uk/links/LMOverview.
