Services For Staff

We are keen to work with and support staff in a variety of ways. Contact us to discuss any ideas or issues for support or collaboration. We rely on good links with staff to develop our services. We also depend on staff to remind and prompt students to use their careers service at all stages of their study and after graduating.

Information for Handbooks
A summary of Careers and Jobshop at Chichester suitable for inclusion in handbooks: Careers and Jobshop (PDF)
Careers Education
If you already run or are putting together a module that includes a careers element do get in touch for any support with this. We can help with design, resources and / or input. A useful document is the first draft of the AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services) Benchmark Statement For Careers Education. Produced in the summer of 2005, it details the characteristics and principles of careers education and includes approaches to developing content, use of theoretical models, teaching, learning and assessment.
Talks to Students
We particularly welcome the opportunity to speak to your final year students in the early part of the academic year. A brief session (from 15 minutes up to an hour) can highlight the key issues and resources available to them to assist the transition from their course into their next steps.
Careers Events / Projects
We are also able to help with specific careers-related projects and events (such as fairs, careers days etc) you may have run in the past or be planning to put on. Our limited resources mean we have to balance our commitments carefully – so our input will always be worked on the basis of best use of these resources.
Referral
Please also refer students to us where you feel they would benefit from some individual support. Either through the personal tutor programme or through more general contact you may wish to point out the potential value of discussing plans and issues with the careers adviser.
Guidance
Guidance is offered through a ‘student centred’ model which focuses on the individual circumstances and issues facing the student. Careers interviews can involve exploring the bigger picture around career and life choices but also focus on narrower, more detailed areas such as applications and interview technique.
How you can help us: Content and Design of Courses
As academic staff you can help us by giving us information about your courses: the content; the way they are taught; potential areas relating to career management. If you have any documentation around your course, such as a course handbook, we would appreciate copies of these.
Entry to Postgraduate Courses
With regard to postgraduate courses at Chichester it is very helpful to find out more about both taught and research opportunities, particularly from the point of view of understanding detailed entry requirements and processes.
Graduate Destinations
Each year the Careers Service produces the first destination information detailing the activities of graduates six months after the completion of their courses. This information is collected following strict guidelines from HESA via a postal survey and a follow-up telephone survey. Academic staff can provide valuable support for this activity in both reminding students of its importance and through helping us to find students when their contact details are out of date.
The destination survey is produced each summer and provides a breakdown of the numbers going into work, further study and those still seeking work. It also shows individual (anonymised) employment and study destinations in terms of job or course title and the name of the employer or HEI. The data is available internally via Portia.
Jobshop
We are always interested to hear about any on-campus vacancies that may be suitable for students while they are studying. We can advertise these vacancies through our online Jobshop database, through announcements on Portia and on the notice board outside Careers at BOC.
We'd like to hear about any temporary or permanent, term-time or vacation work and we can advertise for a few days, for a specified period or on an ongoing basis. To let us know about a vacancy please see the services for employers page.
Feedback
We welcome your feedback. Get in touch with us with any comments, ideas, suggestions and concerns. Our contact details are on the left-hand side near the top of this page.
