About Us

Our department aims to promote the student experience by generating enthusiasm, a sense of community and feeling of belonging.

We aim to give students an understanding of the diverse contexts in which children develop and learn. Students will analyse the philosophies and value systems that underpin working with, and caring for, children and their families/carers. We offer courses which develop skills in the study of childhood from psychological, historical, cultural, sociological, social policy and philosophical viewpoints. Some of our courses offer placements in a variety of settings on such as: schools, nurseries, portage services, hospitals, Sure Start and family centres.

BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies: This degree provides the opportunity to study early childhood from a broad, multidisciplinary perspective. This course critically explores childhood and family life from different perspectives, including:

  • Child-development 
  • Children’s health
  • Inspiring curricula approaches
  • Safeguarding
  • The sociology of children and families
  • Partnership with Families
  • Play and creativity

BA (Hons) Early Childhood Level 6 Top Up

The BA (Hons) Early Childhood is a one year full-time or two year part-time Level 6 degree course which builds on previous study, such as, a Foundation Degree, enabling you to top up to an honours degree.

The course aims to give you an understanding of the diverse contexts in which children develop and learn and explores key aspects of early childhood with opportunities for you to choose areas which are of particular interest.

Foundation Degree in Early Years

The Early Years Foundation Degree provides a broad perspective of work with young children (0 - 8 years). The course develops your skills in the study of childhood from a psychological, historical, cultural, sociological, social policy and philosophical viewpoint.

The course is designed for those currently working in a variety of early childhood settings, for example, Sure Start, pre-schools, nurseries, children’s health services (such as speech therapy) and in social services early childhood centres.
