We specialise in helping you to discover the full range of your talents as a writer, thinker and communicator. To facilitate this, we provide a high level of individual support for each and every student.

To add to your experience, you can opt to spend part of your study time abroad at one of our partner universities.

Our team of academic staff is made up of active scholars and published writers as well as experienced and professional teachers.

Their research engages with the latest developments in literary history, linguistics, theory, drama and theatre history, and in all key genres of creative writing.

We’ve been running creative writing modules at the BA level for almost thirty years and have, in the process, established a strong reputation in the area as well as a genuine community of writers.

You will benefit from a thriving academic culture which includes our unique Centre for Research in Folklore, Fairytales and Fantasy, our Theory Research Group, South Coast Group, Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Research Group, (in partnership with other southern universities) and Thresholds, our on-line international forum for writers of the short story. All of these host a regular programme of conferences, guest speakers, and research seminars to enhance your study environment.

We welcome applications from all prospective students. In addition to sixth-form students completing A-level studies or equivalent, we also welcome applications from mature students currently completing Access programmes, and are fully committed to considering other mature students with non-standard entry qualifications.
