Sailing/Yachting

RYA Sports Science Support Programme

The Olympics, Commonwealth and World Championship hopes of British sailors have been monitored and aided by our Sports Science Support Programme.

The support programme comprises of two full-time members of staff under Peter Cunningham work alongside senior and development squads of the RYA.

Peter Cunningham has worked with the Olympic sailing squad since September 1993.

Since March 1998 this has been a full time position funded by the Royal Yachting Association in conjunction with their World Class Performance.

 

Peter spent a month in Athens at the Olympics where sailing was Britain´s most successful sport (2 gold medals, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals). This also made GB the most successful sailing nation in the World. 

All of the RYA squad come to Chichester for regular fitness assessments and general sports science input. Out of the medallists Peter has worked with the following:

  • Ben Ainslie (Gold medal Finn class Athens 2004, Gold medal Sydney 2000 in the single-handed Laser class, Silver medal Atlanta 1996 Laser class)
  • Shirley Robertson (Gold medal Athens Yngling, Gold medal Sydney 2000 in the single-handed Europe class)
  • Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield (silver medal 470s)
  • Iain Percy (Gold medal Sydney 2000 in the single-handed Finn class)
  • Ian Walker (Silver medallist Sydney 2000 (helming Star Class) and Silver medallist Atlanta 1996 (crewing 470 class)Mark Covell (Silver medallist Sydney 2000 (crewing Star Class)
  • Ian Barker (silver medal Sydney 2000 - helming 49er class)
  • Simon Hiscocks (Bronze medal 49er Athens, silver medal Sydney 2000 - crewing 49er class)
