English Degree Courses

BA (Hons) English
BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing
At Chichester, we have two degree routes, English and English & Creative Writing. Either of these can be studied as a Single Honours subject, as a Major subject, or as a Joint subject with other areas such as Media Studies, Fine Art, Music or History. All students follow a foundation year in Literary History, Language, Literary Theory and Creative Writing. In the second year you will choose to pursue a particular route in either English or English & Creative Writing. There is also a choice of modules, which can be taken from the Language, Drama and Contesting Texts strands.
In year three, if you have chosen the English route, you will take the Theory and Criticism strand, as well as a selection made from the Special Subjects based on tutors' particular research interests. If you have chosen the English & Creative Writing route, you will work on a larger Writing Project of your own with tutor input. All students write a 10,000 word Dissertation on a subject of their own choosing. (Joint students may opt for a dissertation from either of their subjects.) All third year students may choose from the range of special subjects on offer. Here are a few examples: Strange Hybrids: The Post-modern Novel; Shakespeare Text and Theory; Female Subversiveness in Canadian Fiction; On the Edge: Violence and Twentieth Century American Fiction; Women's Prose Writing of the Romantic Era; Literature, Spirituality and Desire; Reinventing Nature: Contemporary Poetry and the Environment.
Horsham
We also offer a special option for students based in Horsham. In the first year you will study one day at our Chichester campus. If you choose to follow the English and Creative Writing route in years two and three, then you will continue to study one day a week in Crawley. If you choose to follow the English route, then all your classes will be based in Chichester.
