Victoria Brown

Victoria is a textile artist working predominately in hand rolled felt.

The process of making and the early historical and cultural significance of felt and the nomadic history of felt inform her work.

The work ranges from large wall pieces, rich in colour, to smaller hand held forms using felt, glass and pewter, exploring ‘the spaces between’, either that which exists in language or physically in materials and process and the ordering of process and making.

Thick felt forms are created around glass vessels, felt re-describes the glass form and create a mould for molten pewter to be poured into. There is a sense of the ludicrous in pouring molten metal into textiles.

The pewter takes the exact form of the felt, picking up the texture and the surface of the felt fabric in the metal – it retains scorched fibres in the metal, becoming a hybrid and the felt mould is the record of the process. 

Victoria Brown’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, it is held in public and private collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum London.

Her work has been widely published and she has written two 'how to do it' books. Previously she had a successful millinery business, with a notable client list.

She designed and made the hats for Jean Muir (Ltd) and handmade felt and garments for Georgina Godley, and Paul Smith. 

Victoria has wide experience of working with children and family workshops in schools, museums and galleries designing and leading arts projects. 

She has worked with Creative Partnerships and the Making It Work project in Slough, Winchester Gallery's successful Village Schools Project and Barbican Education, and currently she leads family workshops for the LSO at the Barbican and St Luke’s London.

In The Pairings Project, initiated by Professor Alice Kettle at Manchester Metropolitan University Victoria worked in collaboration with 2 other artists Jane McFadyen and Kirsteen Aubrey looking at the 'process of making' and the incorporation of glass and crochet with the felt. 

The project was in association with The Institute for International Research in Glass, The University of Sunderland, Autonomatic: Research into 3D Digital Design at University College Falmouth and the Ceramics Research Centre Production Cardiff College of Art and Design.
