The Course

The History programme combines flexibility of choice with a carefully designed clustering of modules through the use of particular ‘strands’ of ‘themes’ of historical study that run throughout all three levels. These strands are normally co-ordinated or taught by a particular tutor with a specific research specialism in the field. Students are free to move between strands in order to construct their own individual degree ‘package’.
Because the History team has always prioritised student choice, there are relatively few core or compulsory modules throughout the programme. At Level One Module for example, only HIL107 ‘Making Histories’ and HIL115 ‘Contemporary Debates on the Nature of History’ are compulsory for Single Honours and Major history students (‘Making Histories’ is also compulsory for History Joints). In Level Two Module only one module – HIL217 ‘Approaches to Research’ – is compulsory as a preparation for all those students electing to undertake their dissertation in History in the final year. The dissertation at Level Three Module must be taken in History by Single Honours and majors students – Joint students may choose to do their dissertation in either subject.
Study Options
History welcomes applications for both full-time and part-time study. Part-time students enjoy exactly the same set of modules, the same choice of routes and facilities, but take fewer courses each year. History is available as a Single Subject or in combination with other subjects as a Major, Joint or Minor route. Popular combinations with History include Heritage Studies, English, English & Creative Writing, Theology and Media Studies.
