History currently has approximately 20 students registered for programmes of study leading to the award of MPhil (circa 50,000 words) and PhD (circa 80,000 words). These programmes are available as full-time and part-time study options. The usual time taken to complete a part-time MPhil is two years minimum and six years maximum. A part-time PhD normally takes three years minimum and six years maximum.
The University currently runs a Probationer MPhil scheme whereby candidates may register for six months at low cost, in order to carry out feasibility studies of various kinds, including some testing of interest, materials, methods and resolve. Candidates have found this scheme of great benefit when submitting formal research proposals and applying for funding, whether at Chichester or elsewhere. A number of small funds are normally available in History for particular types of study.
Research students come from many different backgrounds and age groups and are very well served by our excellent Learning Resources Unit on the Bishop Otter Campus which carries over 19,000 history-related texts. Access to Chichester's IT network for word processing, database and spreadsheet creation, graphics, desktop publishing, statistical packages, CD ROMs and unlimited Internet usage is provided on both campuses.
