Heritage Studies

Heritage Studies is a new three year minor route in the History programme which offers a choice of modules on the theoretical, practical and technical issues involved in museum and heritage practice. It offers students an introduction to some of the issues that those working in the heritage sector are facing and provides an academic platform for possible further professional training.
The route consists of studying local, regional, public and oral histories and explores, amongst other things the ways in which historical objects or archives are catalogued and preserved; the function of museums and heritage sites in contemporary culture and the interaction between academic history and the local community. The route offers the following opportunities:
- Field trips to local museums and heritage sites;
- Talks from museum personnel and heritage practitioners;
- Projects based on site evaluations;
- Opportunities to work within the heritage industry
