A career in teaching

Our teacher training courses have a strong national and international reputation; we are recognised as one of the leading teacher training institutions in the country, with a long and distinguished record of training teachers dating back to 1839. We are committed to supporting the National College for Teaching and Leadership to increase the diversity of the routes into teaching and we aim to widen participation from those groups who are currently under represented in the teaching profession.

Why teach?

Teaching is one of the most rewarding, interesting yet challenging professions.  Teachers are responsible for ensuring that children enjoy learning and gain an education that will enable them to flourish in contemporary society. Join our thriving community of lecturers and staff and enjoy training to teach.

 Postgraduate Pathways into teaching

PGCE

Our Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) programmes offer high-quality training for those wishing to teach in the primary or secondary age range. The university has very strong partnership with schools.  During the 38 week programme you will spend the majority of time on placement in at least two schools to apply and develop practice discussed in sessions at the University.  Find out more or apply for one of our programmes:

Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Graduate Employment Based Route

This route is for existing graduates in an early years setting who require further training and further experience to demonstrate the Early Years Teacher standards, or a graduate newly recruited to an early years setting in order to undertake the course.

PGCE School Direct

School Direct is a new school-based way of training to become a teacher which gives you the chance to learn ‘on the job’. You are recruited directly by the school, with which we work closely, and will attend the university for some of your studies. Our School Direct places are available in some of the best primary and secondary schools in the region which include Ofsted “outstanding” Teaching Schools and academies. Find out more about School Direct.
