Application advice

All applications for the PGCE must be made through the UCAS Teacher Training website.

UCAS sends your application to our Admissions department who check the details you have provided and whether places are still available. We then decide whether to offer you an interview based on the information you have given. We will be looking to see if you meet our application criteria and are going to make a great teacher.

Apply early!

Places on PGCE courses fill up quickly and we will stop accepting applications when the course is full. The sooner you apply, the sooner we can interview you.

  • You must have GCSE passes in English, Maths and Science at grade C or above (or equivalent). Don’t assume that a Level 2 qualification will be enough and if you are unsure please contact Admissions to check. Two useful sites to help you find GCSE courses are the National Extension College for distance learning courses or Learn Direct for courses in your local area.
  • You must have a Honours degree (usually upper second class or above)
  • You need to have experience observing or working in a primary school (see below).
  • Your personal statement should convince us that you are serious about teaching as a career. It is your pitch to the admissions tutors so it needs to be relevant, thoughtful and serious. Make sure that you explain why you want to teach and tell us about your experience in school. There is some good advice to help you write your personal statement on the DfE website.
  • In addition, all successful applicants will have to obtain a DBS Disclosure and complete a satisfactory Medical Declaration before commencement of the course.

Get experience

All applicants need to have spent a minimum of two weeks experience in an appropriate school before interview and most applicants have significantly more than this. Where possible, we recommend that you try to gain experience in a range of classes so you experience working with different age groups in different subjects. This experience is very important because it helps you to understand the role of the teacher.

Interview

If you meet the application criteria, you will be invited to an interview at our Bognor Regis Campus. Information about your interview is sent to you so that you can prepare as necessary. The interview will involve a group assessment task and a paired interview. There will also be opportunities to find out more about the course and to take a tour of the campus. Decisions are made soon after the interview and offers are sent out by the Admissions department as soon as possible.

Skills Tests

If we offer you a place it will be subject to your passing Literacy and Numeracy skills tests. More information and advice about these can be found here

Funding

Information about funding for postgraduate teaching qualifications (primary or secondary) can be found at the DfE website.
