Subject options for PGCE Secondary

While this course aims to enable you to become an effective classroom practitioner, it is underpinned by a commitment to developing reflective practice, a commitment to professional values and the promotion of inclusive practice.

You will be part of a small cohort of students in your subject route and you will also work with students from the other subject groups in Professional Studies. 

This enables you to develop expertise in your subject teaching and also to understand the wider professional role of the teacher; thereby achieving a well-developed sense of your own subject as well as its relation to other subjects. 

We believe that this equips you to become more than a competent classroom practitioner, because you will be able to reflect on and improve your professional practice throughout your teaching career.

The University of Chichester Secondary PGCE is characterised by a very strong partnership with the schools in which you develop your practice. 

There is very effective communication between the university and its partner schools and relationships are well established. 

A high proportion of student teachers are employed in partner schools at the end of their training each year and a large number continue to have links with the course in a variety of roles. 

These links include contributing to university-based sessions, involvement in interviewing candidates for the course, and working as mentors with PGCE trainees. 

They are able to draw on their own experience of the same course that you are undertaking to help you to get the most from your experience.

The Secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education is a Masters level programme. 

As well as working towards recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status, you will complete three level 7 assignments of 4,000 words which connect your practice in school with your theoretical understanding of teaching your subject and being a professional teacher. 

70% of the course is spent in extended placements in two partner schools. 

During these experiences you will have responsibility for planning, teaching and assessing a substantial timetable, with support from class teachers, your school-based mentor, and University tutors.

The programme prepares you to teach across the 11-19 age range.
