Before joining the University of Chichester in January 1991, Ray taught Physical Education, English and Drama for 18 years in both secondary and primary schools on Merseyside and in the south east of England.
Ray is an experienced soccer and athletics coach, specialising in middle-distance running. His academic qualifications include an MSc in Educational Studies from the University of Surrey and a BEd and Cert Ed in Physical Education and English from Chester College.
He has also been involved in training courses for teachers in Austria and the UK and has worked for various governing bodies including the FA, ABA and Snowsport England. He has been chairman of governors at an infants school and an external examiner at Goldsmiths, University of London .
Working collaboratively with Pete Bunyan, Ray is conducting research assessing the professionalism of practitioners within the adventure industry. With respect to sports specific settings. Ray has also carried out a number of studies in the field of golf from both psychological and physiological perspectives. He has considered the optimisation of golf performance; the efficacy of warm ups in sport and the physiological impact of carrying equipment.
In addition to teaching on the Physical Education and Adventure Education programmes, he also inputs on the Secondary and Primary PGCE courses.
He is a member of the AfPE and The British Society of Sports History.
