Stephen Myers

About

Prof Stephen Myers is Professor of Exercise Physiology and heads up of the Occupational Performance Research Group (OPRG) with his colleague Prof Sam Blacker. After graduating Steve worked for seven years as an exercise physiologist at DERA and then QinetiQ’s Centre for Human Sciences, gaining research expertise and management experience in wide range of human and engineering domains. Steve latterly headed up the Biomechanics Exercise and Nutrition Capability Group at QinetiQ.

He left QinetiQ in 2005 to work on the Engineering Physical Sciences Research Council funded project entitled Design of Human Performance Marine Craft from a Human Factors Perspective based at the University in collaboration with Southampton University Ships Science Department.

In 2008 Steve joined the lecturing staff, where in addition to teaching, supervises undergraduate and post graduate research projects and currently has three PhD students as well as active research collaborations with colleagues at other Universities, Research Institutes and Industry in the UK and overseas.

In addition to his academic duties Steve manages a number of large research projects funded by UK Ministry of Defence being delivered by the OPRG.

Steve is an enthusiastic cyclist and is keen to get up in the mountains whenever he can to carry out research, for leisure or ideally both.

Research

Research Interests

Steve has broad research interests which at present focus on measuring and optimising performance in military and emergency uniformed services occupations (land and maritime). Another key research interest is the human responses to extreme environments, in particular the effect that hypoxia may have on health and performance (sport and occupational). Having worked in government, commercial and academic research Steve always takes a research question driven approach. This approach has led him to work on many multidisciplinary projects with colleagues covering the full range of human performance sciences a wide range of other disciplines including medical practitioners, engineers, material scientists, molecular biologists, barristers and Subject Matter Expert end-users.

Research Supervision

Steve has successfully supervised over 10 students to completion and is actively supervising a number of students currently. He has also regularly examines PhDs both in the UK and overseas.

Research and Consultancy Income

The OPRG under the leadership of Professor Myers and Blacker since 2013 has secured externally competitively funded research income with a value in excess of £7M generation successfully delivered this through the University of Chichester.
