About

Professor Duncan Salkeld is Professor of Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature at the University of Chichester. He is author of Madness and Drama in the Age of Shakespeare (Manchester University Press, 1993), Shakespeare Among the Courtesans: Prostitution, Literature and Drama 1500-1650 (Ashgate, 2012), and numerous articles on Shakespeare and Renaissance drama. Dr. Salkeld specializes in historical approaches to early modern literature, textual studies, manuscripts and palaeography, and theatre history. He works closely with documentary sources to focus on the detail of everyday Elizabethan and Jacobean life, drawing especially the early modern archives of Bridewell and Bethlem hospitals. Dr. Salkeld welcomes applications for postgraduate work in early modern studies.  His recent and forthcoming publications include:

Dr. Salkeld gives regular conference papers at British and international universities. He leads students on an annual Field Trip to Bethlem Royal Hospital Archives and Museum and The Globe Theatre, and has organized Shakespeare Study Days at the University for local A Level and Access students. He is currently preparing articles on Shakespeare and the arts, Italians in early modern London, Machiavelli’s drama, and a monograph on Shakespeare and London.
