Primary PGCE Modern Languages Route

This 39-week route is a development of the successful PGCE Primary Education course. The specialist route in Modern Languages is focused upon Key Stage 1 (5-7 years) and Key Stage 2 (7-11 years). This route will offer Primary Teacher Training for graduates who wish to become a subject specialist in schools, but who will also be able to work as a classroom teacher.
This route addresses the national requirement for primary children to be taught a Modern Language and will be ideal for those graduates who wish to teach primary age children while retaining a focus on languages.
School Experience
A typical pattern of school experience might be:
- Autumn term - Six week school experience in school A
- Spring term - Four weeks school experience abroad
- Summer term - Eight week school experience in school B.
Placement Abroad
We offer places on the Modern Language Route to students who speak French or Spanish. For French speakers, the four week placement abroad will be spent in Belgium while Spanish speakers will spend their placement abroad in Tenerife.
Course Content
- Professional Studies - in this module students will address the wider aspects of teaching, such as issues of inclusion, for example, Special Needs and issues of inequality as well as behaviour and subject management
- Core Curriculum (English, Maths and Science)
- Foundation Curriculum Studies (e.g. History, PE, ICT, MFL etc.)
- Modern Languages (note that the medium for training and delivery is still English)

Entry Criteria
- As well as the general PGCE admissions criteria, student on the Modern Language route will also need to have an A2 or above in French or Spanish at grade A -C and the ability to be sufficiently proficient in that language to carry out training requirements and teaching within a primary placement. Evidence of proficiency will be sought at interview
