Inaugural lecture of Professor Beverley Hale, Professor in Learning and Teaching
Mitre Lecture Theatre

But teaching is just common sense isn’t it? A conversation with myself.

Since qualifying as a secondary school mathematics teacher at the age of twenty one I have received many people’s opinions about teaching. The one that really made me stop and think is the perspective that teaching is common sense. During this lecture I will explore (with the help of anecdotes and possibly activities) why I found that opinion thought provoking and how it has guided my practice and engagement with learning and teaching theory.
