The first year of study focuses on providing the foundation to the rest of the degree through introducing you to the key subject areas, in parallel with allowing time to focus on your personal and team development skills. As you progress through the degree you will also have option modules that will let you specialise further in key business areas. 

In your final year of study you will undertake a management project. This allows you to research an area of particular interest. 

Students have the opportunity to develop skills in a placement setting either through undertaking a one-year paid placement or through a ten week placement in their final year.

Our programmes support you to become confident and enterprising whilst also helping you master a range of soft skills valued by graduate employers, such as teamwork, communication and time management.

Our facilities

Teaching at the Business School takes place at the Bognor Regis campus. This includes being taught in buildings such as The Dome and our brand-new Tech Park.

The University of Chichester’s cutting-edge Tech Park aims to produce graduates that have enterprise skills, creativity, technical knowledge and are equipped to enter the graduate workforce. Our Engineering & Design and Creative & Digital Technologies departments are also based in this building and have access to brand new equipment, machines and studios.

THE DOME

Outside of The Dome at the University of Chichester's Bognor Regis Campus

The Dome is a historic Georgian building with a modern interior and facilities.  Much of our teaching is seminar style, so you’ll be learning in relatively small groups. On occasion we have some larger rooms, including a lecture theatre, to deliver bigger sessions. Because of this, you’ll benefit from a personalised experience where your lecturers will get to know you by name.

Our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at Bognor Regis is based at the heart of the campus. Here, you’ll find our Support and Information Zone (SIZ) desk where friendly and supportive staff will be able to assist with many aspects of University life including: general IT and library support; booking laptops and computers; queries relating to academic Registry or Finance; and arranging appointments to see a full range of dedicated student support services such as careers, academic skills service, Disability and Dyslexia, and more.

Our LRC provides ample space to collaborate and complete group work as well as somewhere for you to finish assignments and study quietly. You will have access to bookable PCs, laptops and Macs as well as the latest journals, books and online resources. We also have Moodle pages, were lecturers provide a wealth of information about the topics you will be studying to support your independent learning. When you need to take a break, Costa Coffee on the ground floor provides the perfect space to relax.

Work placements

Our Business and Management degrees have a strong vocational focus and are enhanced by our optional work placement programmes.  Work placements and internships give students the opportunity to implement skills and knowledge gained during their time on campus in a real-world setting and allows them to develop their employability skills.

Professional Placement – 1 Year Internship

All students are able to take a 'Professional Placement' during their third year which is a one year paid internship. Great significance is placed on providing a learning experience that assists with the students understanding of business practice and the context in which it takes place.  The University is committed to working closely with business and the community, offering support, opportunities and facilities to both organisations and individuals in the local community, business and public services.

10 Week Work Placement

The majority of our business and management programmes offer our students the opportunity to undertake a 10-week full-time work placement as they begin the final semester of their degree. Placements begin mid-January each year and run until the end of March.  Whilst on placement the students focus on a management project which is normally concerned with investigating management issues within the organisation.  Many placement students are offered full time jobs even before their results are published and they believe that the placement was “Extremely beneficial to finding employment opportunities straight after completion of the course”.

Placement Office

The Business School has a dedicated placement office which works with students and businesses to help them find their perfect match whilst ensuring that all placements are of the appropriate level and suitability for the students degree routes.

Students are ultimately responsible for finding their own placement, however the placement office has built up many contacts and advertises opportunities from organisations many who come back to us each year looking for new students. 

While a large proportion of students secure placements in London and the South East we have students who have travelled overseas for their placements for example, Bahrain, India, Singapore and Australia.

Indicative modules

Year 1:

Management and Organisations
It is highly likely our careers will involve working within an existing organisation or will lead us to form our own. This module aims to provide you with an introductory level of knowledge and understanding of organisational behaviour through exploring the issues and processes of management. 

Enterprise Awareness
This module aims to provide participants with a practical introduction to thinking critically about the commercial realities underpinning organisations and how structured thinking and analysis can enable the development of an ‘enterprising mindset’ that can support informed, persuasive decision-making. 

Business Information Systems
This module is designed to introduce management students to business information systems and how they are used to support businesses effectively. The course begins with an introduction to information systems and fundamental concepts, ideas and critical components. This is followed by an introduction to the role, application and management of information systems in supporting business processes.

Introductory Law for Managers
This module aims to introduce students to the subject of law relevant to the commercial world. It is not intended to make the students expert in the subject, but to provide them with sufficient understanding of it that as managers they are able to recognise its existence and effects within commercial activities that may require them to seek appropriate professional assistance.

Accounting Skills
This module aims to provide students with the fundamental accounting concepts, skills and techniques to enable the collection and recording of data and transactions for the preparation of accounting statements and management accounts.

Entrepreneurial Mindset
In today’s competitive working environment, graduates require strong employability skills, good enterprise awareness and the ability to be entrepreneurial.  This module aims to develop these competencies and improve understanding of how different functional areas interconnect when making decisions; and their impact on the business as a whole. This module aims to deepen student’s knowledge by applying an ‘entrepreneurial mind-set’ to solve a real social enterprise case study problem.  Students will normally work in small groups to develop ideas and a proposed solution to the problem.  The module will also enable students to further develop and reflect on their confidence, resilience, autonomy, negotiation/influencing, team-working, problem solving and creativity skills and understand where they can develop further.

Marketing Principles & Practice

A hands on module exploring and applying the principles of marketing and utilising marketing models and theory in a modern business environment through working with real businesses to help solve their marketing problems.

Academic and Professional Skills (APS)

The module aims to assist in managing the initial transition to a university undergraduate degree programme with a particular focus on the development of skills relevant to underpinning your academic and professional skills development.  The module encourages reflection on and planning for personal development, with an emphasis on students taking responsibility for their learning in parallel with valuing the learning to be gained from, and support that can be provided to, peers.  Two key themes underpin the module: support for the development of academic skills; and focus on the development of personal, interpersonal and team working skills.

Year 2:

Professional Graduate 
This module is specifically designed to assist students in developing understanding and skills that will enable them to approach potential summer placements, part-time roles, one year placements and graduate job application opportunities with confidence. The series of ‘hand-on’ workshops and activities help students to explore key areas of personal skills auditing and development, prepare suitably targeted professional documentation, and develop strategies for finding a placement or subsequent graduate level work.

Human Resource Management
This module builds upon the first year Management and Organisations module, and aims to develop students understanding of key issues concerning human resource management (HRM). It outlines the theory and practice of HRM and reviews the skills that are needed to manage people within various types of work organisations. The workshop learning activities and literature provide a structure through which to locate HRM within both the context of organising and the field of contemporary management from a national and international perspective.

Finance for Managers
The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to, and the development of, several key financial concepts and tools necessary to the understanding and evaluation of business performance from a primarily financial perspective.  The module assumes minimal prior accounting knowledge and aims to provide a practical understanding and conceptual awareness to students who typically will not be intending to follow an Accounting and Finance degree pathway

Research Skills
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the field of business and management research with the express aim of preparing them for their final year management project, or equivalent personal study.  The module will take the students on a structured and applied journey, looking at the rationale and contextualisation for use of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.  The first part of the module will focus on the philosophical underpinnings and basic elements of research design and how they shape and inform the research process.  Within this part of the module, students will be introduced to qualitative methodologies.  The second part of the module will introduce students to the use of computer-based statistical techniques for the analysis and presentation of quantitative data using SPSS.  Whilst students will engage with the philosophical issues of research, emphasis will also be placed on developing a well-constructed research approach, which maximises the benefits of a ‘mixed methods’ approach, capitalising on the advantages of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Operations Management
Operations management is about the way organisations produce goods and services, and in particular the activities that are directly concerned with making and delivering these products. In principle, operations management is very simple. Organisations will take a variety of inputs (materials, money and human resource); perform operations (such as manufacturing and service provision) which in turn will give outputs (the finished goods and services). In practice the business processes by which this is achieved can become very complex. The aim of this module is to enable students to appreciate how organisations effectively manage facilities, assets and resources for the efficient delivery of consistent quality goods and services.

Year 3:

Management Project
The module has a crucial role within the programme of study in that it provides the opportunity for students to research an area of particular interest within an appropriate business, public sector or third sector context. The module is designed to make a major contribution to the professional and intellectual development of students. Many students will choose to undertake a project for a client organisation and will be working within that organisation for a ten week period over the course of their final semester.

Business Strategy
The module encourages learners to think critically about business strategy. It is designed for students that may have little or no personal experience of strategic management, whom may not go directly into roles that require strategic management skills. The Business Strategy module aims to deliver strategic management for non-strategic managers. Learning and teaching take a student-centric orientation, to pull together core themes from business and management disciplines covered in previous modules. Learners will design business strategies, based upon tools and models, to analyse the strategic context. Consideration is given to the effectiveness of corporate vision, the application of strategic tools, models and concepts (such as value chains and approaches to segmentation), the processes of strategy, and critical success factors in the delivery of competitive advantage and customer value.

  • ​Two from the following three modules;
    • Strategic HRM
      This module builds upon the second year module, Human Resource Management.  The module starts from a “macro” perspective where particular strategic business and the associated HRM issues are identified.  The focus is then on the operational consequences that follow from these strategic issues and goals.  Towards the latter part of the module the focus is on the micro issues of strategic HRM.  The module focuses on the integrative nature of Strategic Human Resource Management and how it can be put into operation with a range of management tools and techniques.  The importance of the subject area is maintained through the identification of current HRM issues and themes, and the practical application and consequences of such developments. In addition the spotlight is placed on the role of the HR specialist and the skills and abilities required for such a role.
    • Corporate Finance
      This module aims to give students an insight into the practical implications of key areas of corporate finance. The module will commence with an overview of the core concepts of corporate finance and progress to focusing on specific areas related to e.g. corporate valuation and merger and acquisition activity. More complex aspects of finance theory will also be introduced including Portfolio Theory, the Capital Asset Pricing Model and Capital Structure Theory. A key aim of the module is to encourage students to examine “corporate finance in action” essentially linking theory and practice. With the nature of the module students work is likely to be influenced by current developments and occurrences in the corporate world.
    • Global Branding
      Students will critically appraise global marketing opportunities and gaining competitive advantage to make decisions relating to an organisation’s ability to successfully enter and compete in international markets. The module will explore key aspect of globalisation, regional trading blocks, organisations involved in promoting trade that affect global marketing operations, developing the learner’s problem solving, decision-making and critical evaluative skills associated with global marketing.

10 Week Work Placement
This is a double weighted module aims to provide an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience of working in an organisation for 10 weeks in Semester 2 of their final year. Students will typically be conducting their Management/Consultancy Project in parallel with this module whilst on work placement. The primary aim of the module is to enable students, within the context of their working environment, to focus on areas of personal development with a view to enhancing their employability skills

    • Business Ethics and Social Responsibility
      The module aims to raise awareness of ethical considerations relevant to many business practices and issues, and corporate social responsibility. Students will be introduced to the concepts, theories and techniques used in addressing such ethical considerations. This will develop students’ skills in critical analysis and argument, in particular ethical reasoning, particularly through critical discussions of current business and government policies relating to corporate social responsibility; and reflect on their own moral values, their attitudes and behaviour.
    • Contemporary Issues in Global Business
      This module introduces you to a range of current global issues that businesses need to be aware of to successfully compete and grow in an increasingly competitive international business environment.  The module focuses on specific business issues that will broaden your understanding of the challenges and opportunities that organisations face when working with overseas clients, operating global supply chains and working with people of different nationalities and cultures.  The module aims to enhance your existing business knowledge and build on it further by exploring a range of global issues you may not have had the opportunity to fully evaluate until now.  There are many global business and economic issues that businesses face in today’s rapidly changing political and economic environment, with some of the main ones explored in-class and through guided learning.
    • Small Business Enterprise
      Ever wondered what it’s like to run your own business and unsure of how you would go about it?  This module adopts a practical approach to investigating the small business sector and developing business ideas.  The module concentrates on the planning involved when setting-up a new business venture.  The main output of the module is the creation of an early-stage business plan that could be used to either set-up a new, or develop an existing business.  Even if you decide that running your own business is not for you, going through the experience of developing and writing a business plan, will provide insight into both strategic and operational small business decision making; and increased employability skills that will prove valuable to a future employer.

Our approach to supporting your learning, and how your learning is assessed, is designed to enable you to become a confident and enterprising graduate.  It is focused on seeking to support your ambitions, in parallel with ensuring that the needs of employers are met.  With this in mind, key features of our approach to learning and assessment include the following:

  • In place of the more traditional large group lecture method to teaching undergraduate students adopted by most University Business Schools, our approach involves tutors working with relatively small numbers of students at a time.  As well as providing an excellent environment for supporting you in the development of your subject expertise, it also helps you to develop a wide range of soft skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management.  These attributes are highly valued by graduate employers. 
  • Opportunities to work with organisations on current commercial/business problems and projects.  These experiences are used to provide the basis for assessments that enable you to apply your learning within authentic commercial situations.
