This BA (Hons) Business and Event Management course focuses on building the skills and experience you need in business and event management, particularly the logistical and operational elements of event management. One of the special features about this degree is that in the second and final year, you have the opportunity to plan, design and implement your own events.

Business is brought to life on this BA (Hons) Business and Event Management degree with focus on current real-world business and event and project management practice. You will work on live business projects and case studies to develop your confidence, business knowledge, entrepreneurial mind-set and understanding of event management principles and design.

You will explore a range of topics such as management, events design and creation, marketing, project management, operations management, branding, public relations, virtual events, communications, and sustainability to provide you with a strong foundation of event, project and business management needed by employers today.

Many of the jobs you will hold in the future don’t exist yet and this degree will teach you management fundamentals to deal with today’s complex and changing business landscape. It will also develop your marketing focus should you decide to progress your career in marketing and extend your studies further to gain full Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) accreditation.

This BA (Hons) Business and Event Management degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) which is a professionally recognised qualification with marketing professionals. Upon satisfactory completion of year 1, you could be eligible for exemptions from the CIM Certificates in Professional Marketing or Professional Digital Marketing. The University of Chichester is a CIM gateway university, which means that students (and those within 2 years of graduating) have exemptions against the CIM Certificate or Diploma in Marketing or Digital Marketing. This will be useful if you decide to pursue a career in events and marketing and would like to gain further qualifications to enhance your career.

Teaching and Assessment

How you will learn

Throughout the degree, you will learn business, management and event management disciplines from industry experienced lecturers and business guest speakers. You will take part in online discussions and have the opportunity to take part in client visits.

The majority of the course is taught by applying business, management and events theory to practical scenarios where you can develop your problem solving, organisation, planning and project management skills. You will also be able to work with real clients and business on current commercial and business opportunities, challenges and projects. Some of your assessments will focus on individual or collaborative live client projects. You could be assessed through client presentations, peer group assessment, reports or creative and technology outlets such as posters, websites, blogs, social media. If you are pursuing professional association qualifications you will also be assessed by through exams.

To ensure we provide a ‘professional’ environment this course is taught in small, interactive workshops of up to 30 students. In these workshops you will discuss a specific business topic and have opportunities to work on tasks, have group discussions and feedback your views in a supportive and stretching environment.

As a result of our teaching approach, you will develop confidence and interest in the business environment as well as a wide range of soft skills such as teamwork, communication, planning, organising and leadership.

Our assessments aim to reflect work-based scenarios and as a result there are minimal exams with more focus on action and problem-based assessments, with most assessments based on presentations, portfolio work, live event delivery, or reports. Where there are exams, the majority are ‘timed assessments’ and ‘open-book’.

The Course

What you will study

You will study a selection of core and optional modules in each year. Each module is worth a number of credits and is delivered differently depending on its content and focus of study.

Most of our business degrees share core modules during the first year, so you may choose to move from a joint honours degree to a single honours option at the end of year one if you find another subject of particular interest.

The first year focuses on understanding the fundamentals of business management, how decisions are made and affect other business areas. During this year, you will develop your employability, enterprise awareness and build a foundation of business knowledge for the rest of your degree through key subject areas such as leadership, consumer buyer behaviour, event design and creation, brands and branding, digital campaign planning, PR & sponsorship and global branding.

During year two, you will further develop knowledge in business and event management in core modules and start to build your own specialism through optional modules. You will also start learning research skills that prepare you for your research dissertation in the final year. During this year, you will consider whether to go on a one-year placement or study exchange at the end of year two; or continue straight to year three.

In your final year, the research dissertation, a live event or consultancy projects will be your main focus, where you research articles about a particular topic and issue, then carry out primary research to investigate further, analyse data and come up with some recommendations and conclusions. This can be for a real client, or a research topic, depending on your chosen route. You will also have the opportunity to specialise further and select modules that most interest you and prepare for your career.

If you feel that you would like to gain more work experience specific to your career pathway, or, you went on the one-year placement and would like to gain further work experience, you could select the short work placement option in the final semester and carry out your research dissertation whilst on placement for the organisation.

Academic & Professional Skills 1

This module will support your transition into a university undergraduate degree programme. You will focus on developing academic and professional skills and be encouraged to reflect on and plan you own personal development. You are provided with a range of topics to help you develop and you can choose those most beneficial to you.

Enterprise Awareness

This module gives you a practical introduction to the commercial realities of organisations and how decision-making impacts different areas of the business. You will use the business model canvas to explore the relationships between decisions in operations, sales, marketing, finance and distribution. You will also be introduced to basic creation and interpretation of key financial documents and ratios to assess business performance. You will be assessed through a group assignment and individual financial portfolio accompanied with a short professional discussion.

Entrepreneurial Mindset

This module aims to deepen your knowledge of being entrepreneurial and applying an ‘entrepreneurial mindset’ to solve a real life case study with a client. You will usually work in small groups to develop an ‘innovative’ solution to an identified problem or opportunity. In today’s competitive business environment, graduates require strong employability skills and a resilient attitude. This module aims to develop these skill sets by working with a real client in creating ideas, implementing one of them and assessing how they can be more innovative. This is a CMI and CIM accredited module. You will be assessed through a group presentation to the client and an individual report on how the entrepreneur can be more innovative.

Event Planning, Design and Creation

Events are increasingly seen as an integral part of regeneration and development strategies in many settings and destinations. This module introduces you to the principles of event planning, design and creation. You will develop a detailed understanding and appreciation of the range of event environments you could design, the inherent management challenges event managers face, and the basic design tools you will use as an event manager. You could take part in local field trips and will explore national and international events case studies.

Management and Organisations

You will explore business management theories, the role and position of a manager, and your ability to manage others. You are encouraged to develop your self-awareness as a potential manager and investigate issues like the history of management, structures, functions, culture, sustainability and innovation of an organisation. You will also explore aspects of business psychology and how people are motivated, behave and discuss theories of leadership and conflict management that can be used in effective management. You will be assessed through a report on management topics of interest.

Marketing Principles and Practice

This introductory module explores the role of marketing in the modern business environment. You will discover the core tools and concepts of marketing and investigate the marketing principles of the extended services mix, buyer behaviour, segmentation and market research. You will explore business aspects such as contemporary society, digital innovations and disruptive business models. This is a CMI and CIM accredited module. You will be assessed through a business report.

Social Media Marketing

This module introduces you to social media from a business and professional perspective. It is framed within the context of the marketing mix, but explores the trend with this tactical aspect and more current ideas around the concept of digital consumers and engaging brand experiences. You will explore the history, development and future of social media as well as looking at tools to manage roles, teams and campaigns.

The Contemporary Tourism & Event Management

This module introduces you to the characteristics of the contemporary tourism and event environment. the module is designed to provide a foundation unit for the study of tourism and events at a local, regional, national and international level.

Global Business Today

This module introduces you to current global issues that we are hearing about in the news today that are vital for business to react to in order to successfully compete and grow. Businesses are operating in an increasingly competitive international environment and this module broadens your understanding of the challenges and opportunities they face in areas such as international trade after Brexit, political unrest, differences in national cultures, global inequality, operating sustainably and global consumer behaviour. You will be assessed through creating a conference paper and presentation on one global topic of interest.

Sustainable Business and Circular Economy

Businesses are increasingly recognising the range of stakeholders who may be impacted by or have influence over their business, increasing the need for greater social corporate responsibility. This module explores this principle and focuses on businesses environmental impact and sustainable development. You will explore the concepts of the ‘triple-bottom’ line and ‘circular economy’, where not only economic but also social and environment issues are regarded as important in business planning. You will critically explore the concept of sustainable business management by applying the topics to a range of case studies including tourism, events and the wider business environment, at a national and international level. You will be assessed by creating sustainability videos and presentations.

Professional Graduate

This practically-led module will support you to develop a critical understanding of the concept of professionalism and how it relates to being a graduate in the workplace. You will plan your own development towards your graduate recruitment and if you chose a one-year internship (professional placement), you will focus on applying and preparing for this placement. The module emphasises the importance of developing your own employability and encourages continuous reflection on personal and professional development (PDP). This is a CMI accredited module. You will be assessed through two assignments, a mock job/placement interview and reflective report with PDP action plan.

Planning and Managing Events: Principles to Practice

This module will give you with the conceptual knowledge and practical understanding of the tools, steps and requirements you need to run a successful event. You will gain a detailed understanding and appreciation of the specific and complex requirements needed to plan and stage an event, as well as understanding of the implications and impacts that events create in the physical and social context where they are organised. You will use a vocational, hands-on approach to develop practical experience in planning and implementing a small-scale event.

Data Research for Business

This module introduces you to the concept of data and market research for decision making, with the dual aim of providing you with the necessary research skills to make informed decisions as business managers and prepare for your final year research dissertation, or equivalent study. The module takes you on a structured and applied journey, looking at the rationale and contextualisation for the research processes required for business decisions. You will use qualitative and quantitative research methodologies specifically applied to your degree route or area of study. This is a CMI accredited module. You will be assessed by market research analysis and recommendations report.

Key HR Practices

This module aims to develop your understanding of key practices concerning human resource management and the importance of managing people. It outlines the theory and key principles and practices of recruitment, selection, retention of talent, performance management and reward. It reviews the skills needed to manage people within various types of work organisations. The seminars and supporting literature provide a structure to explore key HR practices within different organisations and contemporary management from a national and international perspective. This is a CIPD and CMI accredited module. You will be assessed by case study HR portfolio and time constrained exam with question focus provided in advance.

Employee Development

This module aims to develop your understanding of the principles of developing a skilled and talented workforce and the benefits. You will explore the factors which influence workforce development and review the scope of learning and development in organisations. You will also consider different approaches and frameworks for measuring the impact of workforce development and management across different organisations from a national and international perspective. This is a CMI accredited module. Assessment is by individual essay and case study report.


This module invites you to explore the challenges of leadership in organisations through a critical examination of theory, practice and possible future directions. It encourages you to explore effective leadership and encourages you to expand your thinking on alternative strategies as you look forward to your future role as potential leaders in organisations. This is a Chartered Management Institute accredited module. You will be assessed by individual presentation and report.

Employee Relations

This module explores a range of topics around the historical and economic relationship between a business and the employee. You will consider topics including the rise of trade unions, resolving conflict, negotiation, and employee relations amongst many others.

Consumer Buyer Behaviour

This module will equip learners with the fundamentals of consumer behaviour. You will critically appreciate the importance of psychology to decision making and the field of marketing, as well as analyse and evaluate individual aspects of consumer behaviour and social and group aspects of consumer behaviour during your studies. Psychology is used widely in both marketing and human resource management and leadership and vitally important in understanding consumer behaviour to ensure business provides products and services that meets their changing needs.

Purple Goldfish and the Art of Service Experience

Businesses consistently seek to improve the quality and competitiveness of their products, services, and experiences. Many business now place greater emphasis on service differentiation, the so called ‘Purple Goldfish’, and on meeting the needs of an increasingly quality conscious consumer market by adding value in service and experience. This module introduces you to the principles and practices related to the development and management of customer service strategies.

Digital Campaign Planning

The main focus is to provide you with a critical appreciation of Digital Marketing, through the integration of emergent media and mobile technologies, with offline communications. You will be introduced to current and relevant examples of marketing initiatives using digital media and be encouraged to create your own marketing campaigns.

Data Science & Analytics

This module will provide you with the background to the core concepts of Big Data and data mining with a focus on Business activity and decision making. In addition, you will be made aware of the fundamental difference between structured and unstructured data types. Assessment is by report, data analysis and visual data presentation.

Economics for Business

This module focuses on business decision-makers and the benefits of gaining a sound understanding of the subject of economics and the analyses of economic data. The module explores economic theories/concepts, their application to the real-world and their usefulness for explaining the changing mechanics of national and global markets and the processes of government policy formation. Assessment is by presentation and essay.

Business Strategy

This module encourages you to critically consider business strategy. The module is designed for students who may have little or no personal experience of strategic management, and who may not go directly into roles that require strategic management skills. You will design business strategies based on specific tools and models to analyse strategic context. You will consider the effectiveness of corporate vision, the application of strategic tools, models and concepts, processes of strategy, and critical success factors in delivering competitive advantage and customer value. You will be assessed through a case study and an assignment presentation.

Public Relations and Sponsorship

Many businesses are managing their public relationships (PR) to deliberately deliver sufficient information about their operations to the public in a planned and sustained way. This information builds a mutual understanding between an organisation and its public. As part of this relationship companies are increasingly using sponsorship to effectively promote their business and develop and enhance their social and corporate responsibility. This module develops your understanding of the management principles and tools of public relations and sponsorship.

Research Dissertation

The module is an opportunity for you to research a specific area that interests you within an appropriate business, public sector or third sector context. Your project will make a major contribution to your professional and intellectual development. Many students choose to go on the short work placement module in the final semester where you undertake a project for a client organisation and your dissertation will be based on this area of work. If you do not go on placement, you can choose a relevant business or management topic relative to your degree programme and career intentions. Your findings must be generalisable and capable of broad application. You will be supported by a research supervisor throughout the different stages of creating a major piece of research work. This is a CMI accredited module. You will be assessed by creating an individual report of 10,500 words.

Applied Event Management 1

In this module, you will review, design and complete each of the planning steps required for the operational implementation of a live external event. Your tutors will guide you towards potential event projects and delivery opportunities based on current University relationships with employers. At the end of this module you will have completed the first part of your the triple-weighted event module and demonstrated the planning and logistical preparation for your final year event. You will be assessed through coursework and a presentation.

Applied Event Management 2&3

In this module, you will have the opportunity to implement a live external event as part of your final assignment. You will reflect on your personal professional development as an event management practitioner and use this self-reflection to assess how your course participation has developed the academic and professional skills you will use in the workplace. At the end of this module you will have implemented a medium-scale external event and produced a detailed PDP document and skill portfolio to support your CV.

Strategic Human Resource Management

You will consider practical and conceptual frameworks in a series of workshops. These interactive sessions will use learning methods including case studies, directed reading, presentations with feedback, self-reflection, guest speakers, workshop exercises and mini-discussion groups. You will take part in simulations and activities to reflect typical business scenarios as you analyse, problem solve and generate a justified solution to a problem. You will be assessed through an open book assessment, an individual report, a coaching session and an e-portfolio review.

Global Branding

You will develop your understanding of global marketing alongside your problem solving and decision-making skills. You will be able to critically evaluate key issues associated with global marketing within the context of a dynamic cultural environment. You will appraise global marketing opportunities and threats and make decisions relating to an organisation’s ability to successfully enter and compete in international markets. The module uses a practical and analytical marketing perspective. You will be assessed through creating a brochure.

Entrepreneurship (Business Start-Up Idea and Plan)

The module adopts a very practical focus and you will develop a small business idea, present this to get feedback on improving the business viability and create a one-year persuasive business plan. Sessions will focus on each aspect of the business that you need to consider in testing how it will be feasible and viable. Assessment is by presentation and creation of the business plan.

Entrepreneurship in Action

This module provides an opportunity for you to start-up your own business within a supportive environment by implementing a developed business idea. You will attend weekly 1:1 mentoring with the lecturer and specialist Business Hot House staff. It may be that you are already running part-time business, or have a business idea and you would like to try and implement with support and already have a good understanding of business planning. You can take this module alongside the Entrepreneurship module if you would like more guidance in developing an idea and business plan. In this instance it will be like taking an entrepreneurship placement where your main focus in your final semester is developing and implementing your own business. Activities could involve creating a website, making sales, delivering events, networking, carrying out in-depth research, creating social media marketing. Even if you decide not to continue with the business idea, the knowledge and practical experience gained will equip you with entrepreneurial skills much sought after by employers. Assessment is by implementation portfolio and professional discussion on how the idea is/not viable.

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility

In this module you will learn to raise awareness of the ethical considerations relevant to many business practices and issues, and raise awareness of corporate social responsibility. You will be introduced to the concepts, theories and techniques used to address ethical considerations as you develop your critical analysis and argument skills and critically discuss current business and government policies relating to corporate social responsibility. You will reflect on your own moral values, attitudes and behaviour and have some interesting debates and discussions in the lessons. You will be assessed through an interview and a portfolio.

Global Business Today

In your first year you can take part in optional business trips to highlight the skills you will need in the workplace. You will meet people in their place of work, ask questions and learn about the industry and work environment of various businesses .

This degree has a strong vocational focus which is enhanced by the work placement programme. Live events, internships and short work placements give you valuable work experience to add to your CV and help to prepare you for the workplace on graduation. Placements improve your employability, enterprise skills, build confidence and help you stand out from the crowd in a competitive graduate market and thrive in business after you leave university.
Whilst studying the business management degree, we offer two placement opportunities to help you gain work experience in your chosen career:

1. One-year Placement

This option takes place after your second year of study and is a 48-week internship where you will gain work experience in the career or sector you are interested in. This is particularly useful if you have limited work experience, or would like a career change. During this time, you will have a paid position with a company and be an employee as well as a registered student. The company will introduce you to the workplace and provide a valuable learning experience to support and develop your understanding of business practice. Most students secure placements in London and the South East but you could travel overseas. Past students have worked in Bahrain, India, Singapore and Australia. If you decide to complete an internship, you will graduate with a BA (Hons) Business and Event Management (Professional Placement).

2. Work Placement (short)

If you are interested in gaining work experience, but would like to complete your degree in three years, rather than four, we offer a short placement in the final semester of year three. Placements usually begin in mid-January and last until late March and are full time, usually unpaid. This placement is assessed as a double module for your degree and focuses on employability and personal development. During your time on placement, you will focus on a specific project for the organisation and your research dissertation will explore a management issue within the placement organisation. If you have previously opted for the one-year placement, you can also take this short placement at the same, or different business to improve your employability further.

Some students will complete both placement options. Many placement students continue to work for the companies they completed placements with after they graduate, with some offered full time jobs before their results are published.

3. Entrepreneurship placement

Alternatively, you may be interested in starting your own business and being your own boss on a permanent, temporary, full-time or part-time basis. Or, you might want to experiment starting up a business, without too much commitment. If you aspire to be your own boss, you may be interested in the ‘entrepreneurship placement’ in year three, where you create a business idea, write a business plan and explore how to implement it with support from lecturers and Business Hot House mentors. Entrepreneurial talent is sought after by employers who are continuously operating in a competitive marketplace and needing to innovate. So, even if you decide that your business idea is not for you, having the experience of developing and implementing a business idea will provide valuable experiences for being an entrepreneur in the future, or an intrapreneur in the workplace. Plus, it provides an interesting talking piece on job applications, CVs and interviews.

Placement Office

The Business School has a dedicated placement office who will work with you and relevant businesses to help find the best placement match at an appropriate level and suited to your degree.

However, you are ultimately responsible for finding your own placement, but can take advantage of the team’s business relationships and opportunities advertised by the placement office. Some businesses contact us to advertise their placements to students which are forward onto students.
