Course content

Our BA (Hons) Business and Tourism Management degree has a distinctively applied focus and our approach to learning and teaching is fuelled by the practical and industry-based expertise of our excellent staff members.

With a focus on sustainable tourism and sustainable destination management, this course is designed around industry recognised and endorsed frameworks for sustainable tourism management.

Our methods are different to many other universities as the majority of learning takes place in group workshops, in an interactive, participative environment.

Modules are designed to be active and experiential so that the skills and knowledge you develop can be implemented in realistic settings.

Our facilities

Like all business related degree students, you will be studying on our Bognor Regis campus. Your classroom time will be spent in up to date seminar rooms with touch screen electronic white boards and high speed wifi, housed in what was a terrace of three elegant Georgian mansions – a building now known as ‘The Dome’. Our current students love the learning environment, the camaraderie, and the fact that tutors know them by name so they are more than just a face in the crowd.

For studying outside of classroom meetings we have a brand new library housing the latest books, journals and online resources, an IT centre, and a student zone complete with barrista coffee and snacks. There is a small a gym on campus, and halls of residence with wifi facilities. The Dome, library, residences and Students’ Union building are all located on a beautifully maintained, green and leafy, level campus. If that’s not quite enough to stimulate your intellect, we are just a short level walk from the beach and, for the more energetic, within cycling distance of the South Downs National Park – brilliant for creativity and inspiration.

Further Students’ Union and sports facilities are available at our Chichester campus and there is a regular subsidised bus service between the two campuses.

Where this can take you

We engage with the local tourism industry and offer a supportive learning environment, primarily based on active and experiential workshop activity. This approach ensures that the skills and knowledge you’ll develop during your time with us will be useful in a real-life management or destination context after graduation.

A business studies graduate might typically expect to work within a commercial environment, but the skills you’ll develop through the degree will be equally applicable to employment within the public and not-for-profit sectors of the economy.

Work placements

Our Business and Management degrees have a strong vocational focus and are enhanced by our optional work placement programmes.  Work placements and internships give students the opportunity to implement skills and knowledge gained during their time on campus in a real-world setting and allows them to develop their employability skills.

Professional Placement – 1 Year Internship

All students are able to take a 'Professional Placement' during their third year which is a one year paid internship. Great significance is placed on providing a learning experience that assists with the students understanding of business practice and the context in which it takes place.  The University is committed to working closely with business and the community, offering support, opportunities and facilities to both organisations and individuals in the local community, business and public services.

10 Week Work Placement

The majority of our business and management programmes offer our students the opportunity to undertake a 10-week full-time work placement as they begin the final semester of their degree. Placements begin mid-January each year and run until the end of March.  Whilst on placement the students focus on a management project which is normally concerned with investigating management issues within the organisation.  Many placement students are offered full time jobs even before their results are published and they believe that the placement was “Extremely beneficial to finding employment opportunities straight after completion of the course”.

Placement Office

The Business School has a dedicated placement office which works with students and businesses to help them find their perfect match whilst ensuring that all placements are of the appropriate level and suitability for the students degree routes.

Students are ultimately responsible for finding their own placement, however the placement office has built up many contacts and advertises opportunities from organisations many who come back to us each year looking for new students. 

While a large proportion of students secure placements in London and the South East we have students who have travelled overseas for their placements for example, Bahrain, India, Singapore and Australia.

Teaching and assessment

Our approach to supporting your learning, and how your learning is assessed, is designed to enable you to become a confident and enterprising graduate.  It is focused on seeking to support your ambitions, in parallel with ensuring that the needs of employers are met.  With this in mind, key features of our approach to learning and assessment include the following:

  • In place of the more traditional large group lecture method to teaching undergraduate students adopted by most University Business Schools, our approach involves tutors working with relatively small numbers of students at a time.  As well as providing an excellent environment for supporting you in the development of your subject expertise, it also helps you to develop a wide range of soft skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management.  These attributes are highly valued by graduate employers. 
  • Opportunities to work with organisations on current commercial/business problems and projects.  These experiences are used to provide the basis for assessments that enable you to apply your learning within authentic commercial situations.
