What our students say

Hellen Piper – Teacher, BA Hons English and Creative Writing

As I embark on my exciting career in teaching English at Secondary School level, I realize one of the strengths that I possess is my extensive subject knowledge. This has been largely due to the range and content of the English modules on offer at the University of Chichester, and to the expertise of the teaching staff. I have been fortunate to have experienced teaching of a very high standard amongst a team of professionals who are experts in their chosen disciplines. I have discovered, in comparison with my other teaching colleagues, that I have a far broader and more comprehensive grasp of all aspects of English; language and literature. My degree has given me the confidence to feel secure in my ability to become a talented teacher, who may, inspire and influence potential students to the university. I have been nurtured and challenged at Chichester, in an environment where academia has always been ready to listen, develop and advise.

Val Evans - Office Manager, Charity sector, BA Hons English and Creative Writing

I thought I'd let you know what a huge difference my degree has made to me. I recently started a new job, as Office Manager for a local charity that supports the families of disabled children. This is my first job since graduating. In my first two weeks I have chaired a meeting, given a presentation to some potential partners, rewritten our Charitable Constitution and written a bid for funding to a major grant-maker. All of these tasks have required me to use skills that I learnt at University, and I can honestly say that, if I hadn't studied for my degree I would not have been able to do this job. Proof that the 'transferable skills' referred to in your module handbooks really do make a difference! I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and the English staff for the brilliant job you do of preparing your students for the workplace. Even as a (very) mature student, I have benefitted from your commitment and expertise, so thank you.

Hannah Waldron - Librarian, BA Hons English and Creative Writing

My BA (Hons) English degree at the University of Chichester has definitely enhanced my career. On a basic level, the award of a degree enabled me to undertake postgraduate studies and thus compete at a higher level in industry. Studying English has provided me with a wealth of transferable skills which have fed directly into my professional and personal life. I gained confidence in my written and spoken work. This has improved my ability to organise and supervise within the workplace. As a trainee librarian, practical research skills gained during my degree are an essential skill and have increased my ability to do my job effectively. Most importantly, my English degree has made me a more perceptive and agile thinker. I would attribute this to the varied course content and enthusiasm of the department’s knowledgeable staff.
