Our facilities

Bishop Otter campus – where you will be based

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students. We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study, including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.

Our Learning Resource Centre is the hub of the learning environment. It has two upper floors of library resources, one for silent study and one for quiet study, both of which have recently been refurbished. On the ground floor, you’ll find the Support and Information Zone, Media Centre, Costa Coffee and a variety of IT resources.

Working with our partners you will also have access to a network of leading museums and archives that link you directly to the world of work. Partners include: Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Tangmere Aviation Museum, and West Sussex Record Office.

Where this can take you

The advantage of this interdisciplinary course is the range of career and research opportunities it opens up, from cultural events management to future academic study (via MA and PhD), from teaching (via a PGCE route) to heritage work.

Graduates from the University of Chichester have succeeded in a range of careers and research roles, from research librarian to MA and PhD studies. We offer a supportive environment to ensure your future success.

Work placements

We offer placement modules so that you can gain vital experience in the workplace. You will be able to work closely with local institutions that are also engaged with questions of literature, culture and history, including New Park Cinema, The Festival Theatre, and Pallant House Art Gallery.

The city of Chichester, with its rich history and literary culture, is a perfect place to enhance your knowledge of our cultural past and present.

Indicative modules

This is a flexible degree where you will select coordinated modules from our departments which allow you to explore themes, critical, and theoretical modes of analysis, and a whole world of musical, cultural, and historical texts.

  • Across the degree you will develop your skills as an independent researcher in a supportive environment, focusing on the issues you find interesting and important.
  • In the final year research projects you will focus this experience with our expert advice in your own exploration of these varied topics.
  • You will have the opportunity, in your second year, to spend time at one of our international partner institutions, to further broaden the scope of your work.
  • The degree is taught in collaboration between our Music and History departments, which work closely together and share a belief in interdisciplinary research.
