Horner, Nigel (2003) What is Social Work? Context and Perspectives, Exeter: Learning Matters.

Prepare for an invitation to interview

Reflect on the following questions:

  • Why do you want to be a social worker?
  • What can you bring to social work?
  • What have you learnt about being a service user from receiving services from organisations such as the National Health Service?

Prepare for the selection process

The aim of the selection process is to ensure that, by the time you leave, you are clear about whether you would like to join the course and the course is clear whether it would like to invite you to join.

What will Happen During the Selection Procedure?

9.15 - 09.45 - The process will begin with an information session, when key information about the course will be shared. This session is not assessed in any way.

09.45 - 10.15 - This is followed by a twenty five minute unseen written task and then a group task.  The group task will be sent to you with the email confirming your interview date .

Each applicant will then have two individual interviews, one with a service user and a carer and one with a practice assessor and a lecturer. There will also be a brief, non-assessed, individual conversation with the Admissions Tutor to clarify any questions about academic matters etc.

It might be possible for interested applicants to meet a current student and tour the campus.

What happens afterwards?

When all interviews are concluded, the interviewers meet to discuss their interviewees. Service users, carers, practice assessors and lecturers share responsibility for the decisions made. We aim to inform you of the outcome within 10 working days.
