The nurturing and encouragement in the first two years of my degree have enabled me to become the confident and skilled artist I am today. At the beginning my skills were basic and limited, but the well-structured workshops, lectures, life drawing, studio practice and tutorials enabled me to acquire the knowledge I need to carry on my practice after my degree. The one to one time with the tutors is brilliant; they have a genius way of getting you to try things that you never thought you would!"

Course content

We recognise that many Fine Art students want to keep their options open when they start their degree, hoping to develop skills in a range of disciplines before becoming more specialised.

This broad based programme is built around the key areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles. It is supported by technical workshop provision to enable you to achieve the highest quality art production. This range of options allows you to commit to one of these discipline areas or to work across these areas in a hybrid manner. We will encourage you to develop an intellectual curiosity, and a sense of adventure, with an ability to deal with the unpredictable.

In the first year students will initially be set a series of research and drawing based activities that will drive the students’ ideas towards a self-directed practice, greater independence, and by the final year, the attainment of a distinctive vision.

Lectures and seminars along with the peer group critique in the studio, support independent, self-directed work. Students will learn to create their own negotiated pattern of work as they move towards an exhibition for their degree show in their final year.

Trips to museums and galleries in London and other cities take place throughout the academic year.  We offer you the opportunity to exhibit your work outside of the artOne building. A series of selected work is hung in the general public spaces and provides a professional showcase for your work. 

Main studio, workshop skills and activities

  • Painting: Oil, acrylic, drawing, construction, mixed media.
  • Textiles: Constructed textiles, felt-making, embroidery, papermaking, printed textiles, mixed media, installation
  • Sculpture: Wood, metal, casting, plaster, ceramics, found materials, mixed media
  • Installation and live art: appropriated materials, site-based and gallery-based work
  • Printmaking: Etching, screen-printing, relief printing, mono-print, combined media, block print and photo based processes
  • Drawing: Drawing is seen as an important element in the development and realization of ideas and is the basis of the initial studio work at level one.
  • Digital Art: Digital photography, video, sound, net-art, animation, installation.

Our facilities

The Fine Art department is situated in the dedicated artOne building comprising outstanding studio and workshop facilities. It is an exciting place to study, providing a dynamic and supportive learning environment for the production of original new art work.

The well-equipped workshops and studios provide environments for you to create experimental, inventive and ambitious work.

Sculpture students have access to specialist wood and metal/casting workshops, to a dedicated ceramic space with electric kilns and glaze area, and to a covered space that allow students to work on a large scale and using noisy/messy processes. All BA students are able to book the massive foyer spaces to test out works in a ‘gallery’ environment, or to test out and develop large scale installations.

Textile students have access to a specialist textiles workshop with machines for embroidery, hot press and a printing table, weaving and tapestry, constructed textiles, felt-making, Batik etc. 

Painting and drawing students have access to the life room which doubles as a large painting workshop space and to the wood workshop for making stretchers for canvas. 

Printmaking students have access to a specialist print workshop with silk screens and etching tables, a flat press bed for relief prints, and light box for photo etching and screen print.  

The main studio space in the purpose built artOne building provides individual studio spaces for all students as well as bookable spaces for installation, performance and projection work.  All full time BA students, and part timers doing the ‘studio practice’ modules will be allocated a personal studio base in which you can carry out your self-directed projects and art work.

All students also have access to workshop areas and technical support in the key disciplines of the Fine Art programmes.  The workshops reflect the range of options across the various degree programmes. A distinctive aspect of the department is that of individualized working areas in the studio space.

Where this can take you

Fine Art graduates from the University of Chichester are immensely employable. Employers always stress that the qualities they most want to see from graduates include skills such as creativity (which could lead onto using your initiative, decisiveness, problem-solving, innovation, adaptability, imagination and the ability to generate fresh ideas) and good communication skills.

The Fine Art degree course here prides itself in embedding creativity (in all it's components) and communication skills centrally within the degree programme. The course offers students further key skills that are both useful for artists but, more importantly, are life-skills that will help them in varied employment situations.

The course provides the opportunity to develop skills across a broad range of areas and become resourceful, reflective learners, finding creative solutions to new problems with the ability to be self-disciplined and able to work independently. ‘Creativity’, thinking ‘out of the box’, and good communication skills (visual, verbal, and written) are all key skills that employers are seeking, and these are fundamental skills developed by Fine Art.

Students will develop the ability to:

  •    reflect critically on their own learning
  •    show self direction, manage their own time, and take personal responsibility
  •    identify and solve problems
  •    anticipate and accommodate change
  •    show initiative and use good working practices
  •    demonstrate interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a group
  •    research, communicate and present ideas in verbal, written and visual forms
  •    source, manage and present information through IT systems

Jobs where your degree would be useful:

  • Art therapist - uses art-related activities to help people suffering from physical or mental conditions, emotional health problems or learning difficulties. The therapy may aid recovery or improve the quality of the patients’ lives.
  • Arts administrator - supports, initiates and develops arts and cultural activities within a particular venue or geographical area. May focus on one field, such as exhibiting visual arts, or work across different forms such as music, art and performance.
  • Commercial art gallery manager - combines business awareness with artistic insight by running a space where creative works are shown and sold. Balances bringing new artists or art forms to public attention with what is commercially viable. Liaises with artists, makers and clients, coordinates events, supervises sales and marketing.
  • Museum/gallery exhibitions officer - plans, organises, markets and administers permanent or temporary exhibitions. This may involve generating ideas that will attract visitors, acquiring or borrowing items and helping to design and develop the space being used.

Work placements

It is vital that students are prepared for some of the things the contemporary art world will throw at them on graduating.

We have developed a programme in which second and third year (level 5 and 6) students focus on aspects of professional practice and vocational experience.

Some students may want to be art teachers in the future, so in level 5 we find work experience opportunities in schools to enable them to test out if this is what they really want.

Other recent students have worked on:

  • Site-specific commissions
  • Community arts projects,
  • Work placements with local galleries and museums (admin and marketing and gallery education)
  • Residencies in schools
  • Creating their own virtual gallery
  • Art sales
  • Exhibition and event development
  • Business plans for self-employment

The experience is invaluable in terms of working to time and budgetary constraints, and in dealing with the public.

Year Three:

  • Dissertation OR 'Essay & Vocational' followed by Professional Practice

Students will explore and research artefacts and concepts in order to produce a critical text displaying coherent personal argument, analysis and expression developed through cumulative and considered individual research.

Emphasis is placed on the depth rather than breadth of research, as students develop an appropriate awareness of historical and contemporary critical and theoretical debate germane to their chosen subject. Having undertaken a substantial written investigation in Level 2 (Discourse 1 & 2), students will be able to draw upon this research as a basis for their dissertation. Key principles, texts and references from Level 2 work may be re considered in the dissertation although students will not be allowed to repeat level 2 text verbatim in their dissertation. Level 2 texts may be reconsidered and represented as appropriate within the context of a researched and developed discussion at Level 3 dissertation standards.

Students will be given tutorial support in the selection, evaluation, development and presentation of critical thought from a range of research resources. The module will culminate in the presentation of a committed body of academic work completed in a sophisticated and professional manner

  • Exhibition A - Degree Show

​​The module focuses on the development of practical work leading towards the Degree Show, and the planning, selection and production processes involved in the Degree Show itself.

Students engage with self-initiated projects which build a substantial body of work for exhibition. The module allows for different methodologies, but all students need to demonstrate:

• Critical engagement in the development of processes, choice of materials and methods of production. • Imagination, ambition and commitment in the progression of ideas and the investigation of significant creative solutions which effectively manifest those ideas. • A clear awareness of the location of their working practice in relation to contemporary artists and relevant discourse. • Effective choices in the selection and editing of work fro the Degree Show exhibition.

This will include visual evidence of the development of ideas and the application of materials through the production of a substantial body of, as appropriate, samples, maquettes, documentation of visual experiments and written notes on the accumulation of ideas and outcomes.

Exhibition: The Exhibition element should evidence effective processes of planning, selection, editing and presentation leading to the exhibition. The exhibition should reflect the achievements of a substantial and sustained body of work which displays a distinctive and personal artistic vision that is informed by a coherent understanding of the historic and contemporary critical context of the work and strategies for effective communication of their ideas and material practice to a range of audiences.

The exhibition module requires the production and presentation of a sustained body of work. To support the exhibition, students will be expected to complete a portfolio of research and development work. The exhibition and documentation should reflect a personal, distinctive artistic vision as well as an understanding of critical approaches and historical and contemporary practices in the Visual Arts. Students are required to develop codes of professional practice including the photographic documentation of their promotional material and a coherent written overview of their work.

You will experience a wide variety of approaches to learning through core and optional modules that build to form an incremental approach to fine art practice. The development of knowledge and skills is encompassed through the use of a wide range of materials, media and processes in studio and workshop activity to develop your practical skills and subject knowledge. The integration of the cultural, critical and theoretical debate and inquiry provides you with the ability to contextualise your work within academic frameworks.

Throughout your degree modules are delivered in a number of different ways including:

Standard module: A single module scheduled over one semester (15 credits normally) examples, FAL 120 Workshop 1, FAL 130 Workshop 2,

Double module: A double module (30 credits normally) delivered in each semester for studio based learning at levels 4 and 5: Teaching is by tutorial, small group discussion, cross level peer group learning: FAL 100 Studio Practice 1, AL 200 Studio Practice 3

Triple module: Exhibition A (personal study 1) (level 6); A triple module (90 credits) is a year-long module that enables you to develop an in depth studio practice. Teaching is by tutorial, small group discussion, cross level peer group learning lectures and visiting artists.

Critical & Cultural Theory modules: Integrate cultural & critical theory with research skills to support degree level study and is strongly linked to fine art studio practice.  Teaching and learning is by illustrated lectures, small group seminars and presentations.

External project and social engagement: A single module (15credit) at level 5 to develop skills in professional practice in an external setting and to expand fine art practice towards future employability: Workshop 4

Professional practice: A single (15 credit) level 6 module that provides professional engagement through the preparation of materials relevant in the support of career development.

Visiting artists lecture series: A cross level lecture programme of national and internationally renowned artist provides insight to professional fine art practice

Daily access to in the purpose built fine art studios and specialist workshop facilities enables and encourages independent study with access to the safe use of technical resources in the production of high quality artwork. The experience of a wide variety of materials and processes provides the opportunity to discover new ways of working and to explore different specialisms .

We try to make your interview experience as pleasant as possible. We want you to be relaxed since this is when we are most likely to see the ‘real you’.

We want to find out about your art practice, your artistic preferences and your opinions about art but we will not be trying to catch you out with obscure questions. Be prepared, but don’t panic!

PORTFOLIO REVIEWS – for £15 per head we’re offering a half-hour 1-1 portfolio review with a member of the Fine Art interview team, plus an additional meeting/tour with a student ambassador to offer further insight into the interview process (i.e. what it was like for them) and the facilities here in artOne.

Home for the Fine Art Department is the dedicated artOne building comprising outstanding studio and workshop facilities, purpose built to enable you to make the best use of your talents and potential. It is open from 8.00am to 8.30pm, Monday to Friday (inc. some Saturdays), with First year students having sessions programmed on 4 days out of 5.

 

5.  Everybody gets their own studio space! As a full-time Fine Art student you would get a personal studio space throughout the year. As a part-time student you would get one when doing ‘studio’ modules.

 

6. There’s no house style! Abstract, Landscape, Figure or Conceptual  - Traditional, Contemporary or Avant Garde – Painting, Textiles, Printmaking, Sculpture, Video, Photography, Installation etc - you decide what to do and we support you in working out how to do it with panache.

Placements are arranged for all students according to their long term aims; i.e: self-employment as an Artist, teaching practice in Primary or Secondary Schools or community organisations, a variety of roles available in Art Galleries or Museums, and many others.
