Course content

We offer a wide range of exciting modules exploring contemporary topics of fundamental importance to contemporary society. You have the opportunity to explore a great range of topics which build upon your A-level studies and guide you to become an expert in the field.

In your first year you will study:

  • Ideas, Identities and Contemporary Culture (core)
  • What is the good life?
  • The Quest for Truth
  • Faith and Reason
  • Religions, Ethics and Violence
  • Do the Right Things
  • The Problem of Human Nature

In your second year you will study the following modules:

  • Work/Schools Placement
  • Philosophy of Religion
  • Bio-ethics
  • Freedom and Justice
  • Race, Gender and Class
  • The Origins and Transformations of Western Thought
  • Critique, Suspicion and Revolution

Or you may select up to two modules per semester from the following: 

  • Major Ethical Thinkers
  • Islamic Identities
  • Hinduism
  • Salvation
  • Buddhism
  • Living Judaism
  • Contextual Theology
  • Contemporary Interpretations of the Bible
  • The Bible and it's Ancient Culture

In your third year you will study: 

  • Dissertation (A major research project in an area of your choice)
  • Thinking through the Holocaust
  • Political Theology
  • Advanced Issues in Ethics
  • Philosophy and the Future

Or you may select up to two modules per semester from the following: 

  • Revisioning Religion, Gender and Sexuality
  • Islam: It's Theology, Philosophy and Spirituality

  • The Theology and Ethics of Paul the Apostle

Where this can take you

Our students go on to an incredibly varied range of careers after university. The skills learnt on our degrees equip students for all sorts of roles in society, there is no one typical career undertaken by our graduates.

Teaching

Perhaps the most popular career path is teaching, both secondary and primary. Our degree courses equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to be a successful teacher. In year 2 we have a Schools Placement, module run by the university’s RE PGCE Co-ordinator, which ensures you have the relevant understanding and experience for a high quality PGCE application.

Graham Cook is a Chichester graduate and Head of a local secondary school  RE department. He writes:

"Being a teacher is fantastically rewarding but it also takes a lot of time, patience and energy. Exploring philosophical questions with 11-18 year old students is extremely interesting and offers a real opportunity for me to learn something new every day.

The degree at Chichester is varied in terms of content and the skills you can develop. I was required to write essays in a way that encouraged me to evaluate my work and to undertake research independently.  I was also given the opportunity to create and deliver presentations to other students, a valuable skill for teaching."

Postgraduate Study

Teaching and assessment

Progressive Assessment

We believe the best way for you to learn is through practice and feedback.  This is the principle which underpins our progressive assessment system.  Beginning in year one you will be asked to undertake pieces of assessment throughout the semester.  This ensures you do not have to do all your assessment at the end of term, a sort of ‘big bang’ method of assessment, in which it is difficult to do your best work.  Rather we break up the assessment throughout the term.

This means we can give you feedback as you go along.  You don’t have to wait until the end of term to know whether you have succeeded or not.  In your year one individual tutorials you will receive detailed and clear help on how to do better in your work.  It means that many of our students far exceed their expectations about what they thought they could achieve academically.

When it comes to assessment you will be asked to undertake a variety of tasks, many of which will be useful in your future careers.  You will be asked to write essays as you might expect.  You might also write book reviews, reviews of films, write reports on projects, make a video, construct an exhibition and make presentations.  It depends a bit on what you study.  You will get a lot of support so there is no need to worry about assessment (too much!)

Interview information

We encourage all students who want to apply for one of our degrees to come and visit us on an Open Day.

If we make you a standard offer we will also invite you for an interview. The interview is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us.  It is an opportunity for you to talk about your interest in the subject, as well as discuss aspects of your personal statement, what career plans you have, if any, and for you to ask us any questions about the course or life at Chichester. If the interview goes well we will revise your offer so that it is a targeted offer.  It is not possible to say what they will be in advance of the interview but a majority of those who come for interview and succeed have received revised offers of ‘EE”. 

National Student Survey

The National Student Survey (NSS) is an independent market research survey carried out by Ipsos MORI. Final year students are asked about their experience of the course. 

  • In 2016 the department achieved 100% overall student satisfaction.
  • In 2015 the department achieved 100% overall student satisfaction.
  • In 2014 the department achieved 100% overall student satisfaction.
  • In 2013 the department achieved 100% overall student satisfaction.

In 2016 100% of our students said staff were good at explaining things as well as 100% saying that staff made the subject interesting and were enthusiastic about what they were teaching.
