Early Years Initial Teacher Training: Assessment Only: This route is for graduates with experience of working with children from birth to 5 years old who can meet the requirements of the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years) without further training. Assessment typically takes place over 3 months.

Teaching and assessment


  • This is not a training programme but ‘assessment only’
  • You are expected to be operating at the level of the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years) across the birth to five age range from the beginning of the three month programme
  • You will be provided with guidance on how to put together and present your evidence for assessment and a tutor to support you
  • We will give you full guidance on what you need to do
  • A personal tutor to provide email and telephone support
  • Observation of your practice
  • Support from your employer/setting
  • A virtual learning environment - e-learning modules, a resource bank and forums


  • Needs analysis and action plan
  • An eportfolio that you build up gradually
  • Evidence bundles - a powerful source of evidence to demonstrate the impact that you have on a child’s learning over a period of time
  • Formative assessment from the setting/school and your personal tutor
  • Assignments - built up during the programme to demonstrate the Teachers’ Standards (Early Years)
  • Observation records - from the settings/schools and personal tutor
  • Moderation of assessment judgements
  • A setting visit by an assessor to observe you teaching, interview you and interview a manager

How to Apply

Registration for the Assessment Only route will remain open until March 2018. You can chose your commencement date between now and 1st April 2018.

There are specific entry requirements so you please contact us at to check your eligibility and request an application form.

This route is self-funded, fees for 2017/18 are £2,600


Entry requirements

All applicants must have a suitable honours degree (2:2 or above);

All applicants must have GCSE passes in English, Mathematics and Science at grade C / 4 or above (or equivalent). We will consider applicants who are taking the relevant GCSE(s) whilst applying.

GCSE Equivalency: We would normally expect applicants to have taken and passed the full GCSE course  however in some circumstances we do accept equivalent qualifications or equivalency tests. If you are unable to enrol for the full GCSE course, please contact Admissions to discuss which equivalent qualifications we may accept.
