PGCE Secondary Modern Foreign Languages

Our PGCE Secondary programme, with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), offers high-quality training for those wishing to teach in the secondary age range.

The Modern Foreign Languages route is designed to equip students to teach National Curriculum MFL across Key Stages 3 and 4 and to A Level.

We are offering a £1000 cash bursary for alumni students continuing their studies with a PGCE.

Entry Requirements

Normally candidates will have an honours degree at 2.2 or above in French, German or Spanish or in a subject where the content can be demonstrated to be at least 50% Modern Foreign Language. 

This may be discussed at interview. 

If you are unsure about the suitability of your degree or you are a native speaker of French, German or Spanish, please contact the course co-ordinator for advice. 

Applicants also require a second language preferably to A level (or equivalent) in French, German or Spanish, although this can be gained prior to the start of the course in September. 

All candidates must have achieved grade C / 4 or above in GCSE English and Maths. 

All applicants will be required to demonstrate awareness of professional requirements within schools and an awareness of the education sector.

Before I even submitted my application for MFL PGCE I felt supported by Elaine and the team. I was invited to attend the annual MFL conference held at the university prior to beginning the course. This was a fantastic way to begin as I could meet other PGCSE applicants and learn from speakers at the forefront of MFL pedagogy. The input and guidance offered throughout the MFL training was far beyond my expectations and proved invaluable to becoming an effective teacher. Each session at the university was relevant, referenced contemporary research and improved my teaching practice measurably. Many of the resources I was offered during my training I use day-to-day in the MFL lessons I teach now. I chose to complete my Secondary MFL PGCE course through the University of Chichester as it was close to home and had a very good reputation. It turned out to be a perfect choice as the training I received was first class. From start to finish, I felt very well supported by caring and knowledgeable tutors who provided relevant, up-to-date tuition with enthusiasm and passion for high quality teaching and learning. I had two great placements in Hampshire and West Sussex, as well as the opportunity to spend a week at a primary feeder school and the numerous day visits to observe in a range of other schools (not to mention the day trip to Paris!) were also invaluable. I am particularly grateful to Elaine Minett, my subject mentor for MFL, for her inspirational leadership and unfailing dedication to helping us to better our practice throughout. Five years into my teaching career, I continue to have regular contact with my mentor and I would not hesitate to recommend this training provider.

Course content

Students appreciate the creative and modern approach to language teaching provided by the Modern Languages course.

Content includes thorough coverage of National Curriculum and assessment requirements combined with a focus on creativity in lesson planning and delivery.

Students will develop their understanding of how children acquire additional languages and how to best support their learning in listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Particular attention is paid to the effective teaching of grammar to young learners and to the development of independent learners.  

Students will develop a range of strategies to motivate young learners effectively, including through the use of song, drama and ICT.

As part of the course students spend some time observing in Key Stage 2 and benefit from joint training with students on the Primary PGCE MFL specialism. 

There are opportunities for students to continue to improve their second foreign language.

Sessions are delivered at the Bognor Regis campus but also include a number of off-site visits to local partnership schools; there are also opportunities to benefit from the expertise of visiting speakers.

Our course includes a well-respected summer conference to which prospective, current and past students are invited along with local teachers, and which provides the opportunity to hear a number of national speakers present on a variety of engaging and thought-provoking topics. 

The Modern Foreign Languages modules are complemented by a Professional Studies programme, which is also based at Bognor Regis. 

There is also the option to gain some experience at Key Stage 2. The subject specific element of the course is delivered at our Bognor Regis Campus.

Our facilities

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree. We pride ourselves on the quality of the learning environment we can offer our students.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support.  We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research. A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas.  We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time.

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus.  It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors.  Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations.  An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Where this can take you

This programme prepares you for a career as a secondary school teacher.  At the end of the year you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status and will be ready for the next stage of your development as a Newly Qualified Teacher in school.  Our students are highly successful in gaining teaching posts, many in our partner schools.

Teaching and assessment

The programme’s delivered full-time over 38 weeks with 70% practical school experience in established partner schools and 30% university-based time, divided between Professional Studies and subject study.

This experience provides you with the opportunity to work alongside serving teachers, learning about the broader roles and skills of teachers and other school staff.

The course is assessed through observation during teaching placements and written assignments.

To gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students need to complete three 4,000 word assignments at FHEQ level 7 (Masters), and two blocks of School Experience.

DBS and School Experience costs

DBS check PGCE applicants are required to have an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service check which needs to be paid for before the start of the course. 

Costs incurred during School Experience Over the duration of your course you will spend 24 weeks on placement. These school experiences are organised in our partnership schools which extend across West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and into Surrey. Travel to placements, which can be by car or public transport, varies but your commute will not usually exceed 40 miles from your term time address to the placement school (assuming your term time address is within our partnership area).

Students not in receipt of a government bursary may receive a contribution towards travel costs depending upon the distance. Whilst on School Experience appropriate professional dress will be required. Students may wish to purchase a laptop/tablet to use whilst on school experience as schools are not required to provide these.
