BSC (HONS) MATHEMATICS AND FINANCE

The BSc (Hons) Mathematics and Finance degree route provides you with an opportunity to explore both mathematics and finance subject fields within a coherent and complementary programme of study.

A mathematics qualification is much sought after by employers in all sectors of industry and commerce and will always enhance your career prospects, and the range of specialist accounting and finance topics provide a strong foundation should you decide to develop a career as financial manager.

A number of the accounting and finance modules that you will undertake are officially accredited by the ACCA (The Chartered Association of Certified Accountants), and successful completion of the degree will mean you are eligible for exemption from a range of professional body exams.

The programme has a strong vocational focus that is enhanced by our optional work placement programme. 

A professional placement year will give you the opportunity to implement skills and knowledge gained during your time on campus in a real-world setting and allow you to develop your employability skills.

Great significance is placed on providing a learning experience that assists with the student’s understanding of business practice and the context in which it takes place. 

Students typically have the option of undertaking a preparation for internship accredited module during their second year to assist them with applying for placements and preparing them for the world of professional work.

My placement year at the National Air Traffic Control Service has been one of the best experiences of my life and I owe so much to all the people I have worked with in making it so amazing. The main thing I take from the year is the development of my soft skills, my improved confidence can now be used for presentations back at the University and I am certain it will help me along my future career path. It wasn’t half bad going on a business trip to Brussels either!

Course content

From scientific advances to economic policy, mathematics is indispensable to modern life. 

Also, in a world that seems to always be facing rapid change one of the few constants is the need for all organisations and business to have a clear understanding of their financial position.

The programme also provides an opportunity to undertake a paid professional placement year between your second and final year of study. 

This is a feature shared with its sister programme, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance, and enables our students to put into practice the skills they have developed and at the same time develop the interpersonal skills valued so highly by employers.

The first year of your studies will introduce you to a range of mathematics, accounting and general management subjects.

Typically you will be studying four modules a semester over the two semesters that make up our academic year.

The pattern of your study in the second year is similar to that of the first but you will be studying more focused accounting and finance subjects including Financial Reporting, Financial Management, and Management Accounting in combination with more advanced mathematics modules.

In addition, in each semester you will have an opportunity to specialise within the mathematics element of the programme through the selection of options.

In your final year with us there will be the choices available to you.  

In particular there will be the opportunity to focus on taking either a Management Project with a finance focus, or alternatively a Mathematics Project.

Over the past few years, we’ve redeveloped both of our campuses so that you have the best facilities available for your degree.

At Bognor Regis campus there is an integrated approach to the provision of learning resources and support. 

We offer a substantial collection of books, journals and other materials to help you further your research.

A range of study areas for group and quiet study including Wi-Fi areas for laptop use are available, or you can use our open access PC and Mac areas. 

We use an electronic learning environment with an expanding portfolio of online library resources from anywhere at any time. 

There are also purpose built classrooms for the teacher training courses, as well as lecture and seminar rooms. 

Our award winning Learning Resource Centre is at the heart of the campus.  It hosts a modern library service with areas for quiet and silent study on both floors. 

Also situated in the LRC is the Support and Information Zone, Costa Coffee and over 80 open access work stations. 

An equipment loans centre offers laptops, tablets and other electronic devices for short and long term loans.

Teaching and assessment

A key benefit of studying with us at Chichester is that you will be taught in small class sizes (containing typically 20-25 students) where you are encouraged to interact both with your fellow students as well as the academic staff.

The Bognor Regis campus has recently received considerable investment in both its infrastructure and learning resources.

The town adjoining the campus is on the South coast of England and has a direct train service to central London with a typical journey time of one hour fifty minutes.

The structure of the programme means that if at the end of the first year you decide on reflection that you would like to focus primarily on Mathematics, or alternatively the area of Accounting and Finance, there is provision to transfer to one or other of our specialist degree routes.

Our approach to supporting your learning, and how your learning is assessed, is designed to enable you to become a confident and enterprising graduate. 

It is focused on seeking to support your ambitions, in parallel with ensuring that the needs of employers are met.  With this in mind, key features of our approach to learning and assessment include the following:

In place of the more traditional large group lecture method to teaching undergraduate students adopted by most universities, our approach involves tutors working with relatively small numbers of students at a time. 

As well as providing an excellent environment for supporting you in the development of your subject expertise, it also helps you to develop a wide range of soft skills, such as teamwork, communication and time management. 

These attributes are highly valued by graduate employers. 

Throughout your degree, modules are delivered in a variety of ways including:

  • Standard module: a single module over 1 semester (usually 15 credits) examples include Data analysis and Graph Theory
  • Double module: a 30 credit module lasting a complete academic year, examples include Mathematics Methods and the Mathematics Project
  • Workshops: workshop sessions are available on a variety of interesting mathematical topics
  • Tutorials: individual tutorial support is offered, providing personal academic support from staff
