Pre-PhD Research Preparation

We runs a Pre-PhD Preparation programme whereby applicants register for six tutorials at a low cost to develop their preliminary research plan with a view to creating a succinct proposal suitable for an MPhil/PhD Research Programme.

Candidates have found this scheme of great benefit when submitting formal research proposals and applying for funding - whether at Chichester or elsewhere.

Ordinarily, students would attend tutorials at the University of Chichester, however, distance learning options are available.

It is not possible to obtain a Tier 4 visa for the Pre-PhD Preparation programme although it may be possible to make use of the Student Visitor Visa to attend tutorials up to a period of six months or study as a distance learner.

Upon application, the Research Office will consider the student's research interests to ensure that they align with the University's research areas and supervisory expertise and availability.

If suitable, the applicant will be assigned an appropriate supervisor with whom they will develop their research proposal.

Entry Requirements

The normal requirement is a good honours degree (First or Upper-Second class) or a relevant Masters degree. Candidates with other qualifications - such as those from overseas - and relevant professional experience are considered individually on their merits.

Students who wish to complete the Pre-PhD Programme and go on to apply for an MPhil/PhD may do so, but will still need to formally apply and be interviewed.

Duration

The maximum time taken to complete this part-time Pre-PhD Preparation Programme is one year, although some students may take considerably less time. Entry to the Pre-PhD Preparation Programme will be subject to the same fixed entry points as full MPhil/ PhD study (October / February).

Cost

Tuition fees for the Pre-PhD Study Programme can be found under the Tuition Fees page.

Prospective students wishing to apply should complete an Application to Register on a Postgraduate Research Programme form and return to pgradmissions@chi.ac.uk
