International Academic and Language Support (IALS)

If English is not your first language, we offer language support to help you with your spoken and written English. This free support package is called International Academic Language Support (IALS)

IALS can run alongside any degree and postgraduate programme and is open to all international students for whom English is not a first language and/or those who have not previously been educated in the UK. The support runs alongside your regular programme, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and across all subjects.

IALS is in addition to:

  • Our Pre-sessional programme which can help you to improve academic and language skills by the equivalent of 0.5 of an IELTS grade which can be taken in July and August before beginning your degree studies.
  • Our International English Studies option can be taken as a joint or minor subject with your chosen subject to provide integrated language development and study throughout level 4 of your degree programme.

What is International Academic and Language Support, (IALS)?

At the University of Chichester your experience as a student is of the utmost importance to us. We aim to provide our students with personalised care and support. IALS is an essential and distinctive feature of the support we offer our international students. The package is specially designed to support international students  for whom English is not a first language and/or those who have not previously been educated in the UK. The support runs alongside your regular programme, at undergraduate or postgraduate level, and across all subjects.

How can the support help me?

The University of Chichester recognises that international students may face special challenges when they enter UK university education. IALS offers you specialised help with the development of your English language skills and with their use in a UK academic environment. It also supports you in making the transition to study in a new academic culture.

  • Social gatherings, excursions and other informal contact with international students.
  • A regular point of contact with a member of staff who can supply answers to your questions about academic life in the UK.
  • A language profiling service so that you, and your department(s), may be advised on the best options for language support*.
  • Individual tutorial support, (up to 3 hours per student per semester), to help you plan, carry out and check assessed work*.
  • English language classes, (if you are not already taking the BA International English Studies programme as part of your studies)*.

  • You can, if you wish, cease to use the support at any point in your studies.

What are the costs?
