3rd International Conference on Physical Employment Standards and the Occupational Physiology Researcher Development Day

In connection with the 3rd International Conference on Physical Employment Standards (PES) the University of Chichester’s OPRG organised an Occupational Physiology Researcher Development Day.

The day was well attended with over 70 registered attendees from over 10 different countries. The day provided the opportunity for individuals to deliver a brief overview of the occupational research that they were conducting at their own institution, along with discussions on various measurement techniques that are currently being utilised in occupational research. This also provided individuals an opportunity to network and discuss common themes of research.

In the morning session Dr Sam Blacker provided an overview of the OPRGs current projects, outlining the work that the team conducts on behalf of the MoD and Emergency services. In the afternoon session Steve Powell, Steve Mcguire, Vicky Edwards, and Dr Oliver Runswick provided short presentations on research grade activity monitors, the isometric mid-thigh pull technique, methodologies for assessing dietary intake of Military officer cadets, and eye-tracking software.

3rd International Conference on Physical Employment Standards

On the 17-19th of July 2018, the University of Chichester co-hosted the Third International Conference on Physical Employment Standards with the University of Portsmouth. Dr Sam Blacker and Dr Andy Siddall of the Occupational Performance Research Group were members of the organising committee with Dr Gemma Milligan (University of Portsmouth), Dr Piete Brown (Institute of Naval Medicine) and Dr Rachel Izard (Army Recruitment Initial Training Command). The conference, which focuses on the field of scientific research that determines the safety, fitness, and training requirements for physically demanding jobs such as the military or emergency services, has had two previous iterations hosted in Australia (2012) and Canada (2015). This most recent conference, held in Portsmouth, had a central theme of “From recruitment to retirement”, and attracted more than 120 delegates representing 14 countries where >80 novel research abstracts were presented. Sam, Andy and the organising committee were instrumental in bringing together the world-leading experts and laboratories from this field and building the scientific programme. The conference culminated in a private viewing of the Mary Rose museum and a banquet in Portsmouth’s historic dockyard.

Fifteen members of OPRG attended the Third International Conference on Physical Employment Standards in Portsmouth in July, which was co-hosted by the Universities of Chichester and Portsmouth. Eleven abstracts from our group were accepted and presented as either oral presentations or posters to the international audience of academics and practitioners working in the field. The broad range of work conducted by OPRG from were showcased across the varied programme ranging from analysing the composition of different jobs, designing fitness tests, predicting occupational performance and optimising training for different demanding jobs. The team also helped visiting delegates by volunteering at the registration desk and chairing scientific sessions.
