Celebrating the small firm

‘A WONDERFUL celebration predominately of the small firm’ is how Professor Clive Behagg, Vice Chancellor of the University of Chichester, described the Chichester Observer Business Awards to a full house at the launch event held on the University’s Chichester campus last week. With 95% of employers nationally employing less than ten people, small firms are central to the process of economic regeneration, an issue which is close to the heart of the University.

“Community is important to us – both our University and our local and regional community,” commented Professor Behagg, explaining why the University has decided to be the headline sponsor of the Awards for the fourth year running.

“Not only is the University a large local business and employer, but our graduates often choose to stay in the area, contributing to the economic growth of the region.” Gary Shipton, the Managing Editor of the Chichester Observer group of papers, echoed Professor Behagg’s comments, and said there is a tight-knit business community in Chichester.

The Awards are an opportunity to meet new businesses and renew old acquaintances, a mix that was reflected in the audience.

Louise Hopkins, Chair of the Chichester Chamber of Commerce and one of the Award judges, outlined the entry process and how businesses could benefit from the opportunity to raise their profile in the local community. “It’s a great opportunity to differentiate yourself from your competitors, as well as raising morale and motivating your staff,” confirmed Emma Shepherd, Business Development Manager at Creations Hair and Beauty in Chichester and a past Award winner.

All entries, which can be a business or a charity, receive publicity in the series of articles that appear in the Chichester Observer in the run up to the Awards.

The entry deadline is 6 March, and a full list of the 18 categories along with the instructions for how to enter is listed here.
