Postgraduate exhibits experimental artwork from Festival Theatre residency

MA student, Andrea Vassallo has had extensive access to Chichester Festival Theatre over the course of Festival 2016, and a new exhibition in the Festival Theatre foyer, which coincides with the University of Chichester Graduation ceremonies held at the Theatre this month, presents his final work inspired by his time at Chichester Festival Theatre.

Vassallo is interested in the relationship between the body and the physicality of the space around it. He used video to research this particular environment, focusing on the ‘fourth wall’. This is an imaginary wall between the stage and the auditorium which divides the performers from the audience, creating an invisible barrier that allows the ‘fictive reality’ of the stage to exist. The culmination of this research, his final piece, was projected onto the Foyle Terrace concrete wall and viewed during evening performances and during this year's Graduation ceremonies.

Vassallo’s residency is the result of a partnership between Chichester Festival Theatre and the University of Chichester’s Fine Art Department. His work during this residency directly contributed to his MA degree show and has provided Chichester Festival Theatre with a means to share with our audience certain aspects of working life at the Theatre.
