Secondary PGCE modern foreign languages enrichment day

Year eight and nine pupils from local schools

A GROUP of year eight and nine pupils from local schools were invited to the University of Chichester’s Bognor Regis campus last month to create and deliver news in a range of languages.

Secondary PGCE students in Modern Foreign Languages designed the day to enable pupils, who are about to make their option choices for GCSE, to use foreign languages for a real purpose.

It was an opportunity for the students to plan in a different way and take learning outside the classroom.

Pupils were involved in presenting weather forecasts, creating headline stories, giving sports commentaries, and reporting celebrity gossip in French, German, and Spanish.

Apple iPads were used to film and broadcast the reports which were shared at the end of the day, with awards for best editing, best reporting, and best presenting among others.

The 37 local pupils, from Horndean Technology College, Priory School in Portsmouth, and Felpham Community College, responded very positively to the challenge and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to work with students from other schools.

They were ably supported by students of A-Level French, German, and Spanish from Felpham Community College.

This is the third enrichment day to be held at the University of Chichester, with previous days focusing on filmmaking and a murder-mystery suspense theme.
