University artist handpicked for CFT residency

MA Fine Art student Kanaida Povey

AN ARTIST studying at the University of Chichester has been selected by the city’s Festival Theatre to exhibit her work throughout the next year.

MA Fine Art student Kanaida Povey was chosen as the playhouse’s emerging artist in residence to display her designs in its auditoriums and help with upcoming productions.

For the next three months the textile postgraduate will also undertake a role in the props department to work on shows including Fiddler on the Roof.

Ms Povey said: “I am excited to push the boundaries of my material and my own ideas.

“I think that working in a new environment, which is unlike anything I have worked in before, could help me push my work to a new level.”

The annual residency intends to develop the postgraduate’s practical skills and knowledge to inform her practice.

It will culminate in an exhibition hosted at the Festival Theatre foyer which will coincide with the University’s graduation ceremonies in November.

Dr Shirley Chubb, a Reader in Interdisciplinary Art at the University, said: “This is the third annual residency at CFT which demonstrates the strong partnership between the Theatre and Chichester’s Fine Art department.

“Kanaida's residency will contribute to her MA degree and she will also support the work of the Learning, Education, and Participation department by contributing to the Theatre’s programme of workshops and events to support young people taking part in the arts.”
