About

Dr. Claire Wijayatilake has been in the field of English Language Teaching for over 30 years. Originally from Sussex, she lived and worked in the field of education in Sri Lanka for 23 years, including 16 years with British Council, Colombo. After holding several other positions in secondary and further education in Sri Lanka, she returned to the UK in 2013 and worked for several universities, including Middlesex, Westminster and King’s College, London. She joined the University of Chichester in July 2022.

Claire holds a first degree in Modern Languages (King’s College, London), DELTA, MA TESOL (Institute of Education, London) and a PhD in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching (University of Warwick). She is also a qualified Spanish teacher.

Professional

Claire was an IELTS examiner for 20 years and an examiner trainer for three. She is co-author of Cambridge University Press’s Mindset for IELTS series as well as other IELTS preparation material. She has also written preparation books for the Cambridge Main Suite examinations.

Claire’s PhD focuses on autoethnography, teacher development and school culture. She is also interested in Sociolinguistics.
