23 Business Dawn Robins (6) 2

About

Dawn completed a BA (Hons) degree in Geography with a 1st Class Honours and, in 2005, was awarded the Wiley Prize for academic achievement and a full Scholarship to complete a Research Masters Degree at the University of Southampton. In 2006 the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) awarded her a full Scholarship to study the impacts of the privatisation initiative on the passenger railway in Great Britain for her Doctorate. Dawn combined her research with working as an Analyst at the transport consultancy, OXERA, and also the House of Commons Transport Select Committee where she provided the expertise in rail and general transport policy as an Inquiry Manager.

In 2010, Dawn arrived in Chichester to research an EU funded project into maritime business clusters in the Channel region. In 2011 she took on additional transport research and now coordinates research projects for the Business School, also supervising many student research projects at Undergraduate, Masters and PhD level

Professional

Learning and Teaching Interests

Dawn is programme coordinator for the MSc in International Business and teaches on the economics module. Apart from that, she is primarily a researcher and her main teaching responsibilities are within the field of academic and professional skills and research methodologies including economics and social science. As an economic geographer Dawn has developed a fascination with transport and mobility and the concepts of ‘space and time’ and has developed teaching materials around mapping economic activity at the local, regional and global level.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Dawn is involved in a variety of research activities as project lead and lead researcher. She is currently the Project Manager in a 4yr, 4-million-euro EU funded water improvement project with partners across the south of the UK and the north of France. Her involvement with a large 3-year EU funded project researching Maritime Business Clusters and Port Centric Diversification brought her into contact with many other academic institutions both in the UK and France. Dawn has also developed a significant reputation for developing supply chains within the Wind Farm sector. This has developed from two consultancy projects for the leading energy supplier EON, and Kent County Council. This has led to her leading on a Capitalisation project into marine renewable energies as part of another large EU collaboration.

Dawn’s passion for transport has been further developed through a study into port transport were local niche ports looked at diversification as a method of achieving sustainable growth whilst reducing transport congestion. This has led to an in-depth study at Shoreham Port of the current development plan sustainability. Dawn’s interest in transport also includes gendered mobilities and the spaces and places car-use enable travel. Mobility is a main feature of Dawns research and adds a second dimension to transport itself.

Dawn has also presented her research into freight capacities in the Channel Tunnel to the EU Commission in Brussels.
