Research Groups

The English and Creative Writing department are active and published researchers, engaging with the current debates in literary history, theory, and linguistics.

We run the South Coast Eighteenth-Century and Romantic Research Group, the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy, and Thresholds, the international postgraduate short story forum.

The Theory Research Group (TRG) is an interdisciplinary group devoted to presenting work in contemporary theory, directed by Dr Benjamin Noys.

It operates by giving seminars to foster debate and discussion in the field of 'theory', it also has a blog that offers information on the activities of the group and theory more generally, and coordinates external events.

Past seminars offered by the TRG at the University of Chichester have included Alberto Toscano (Goldsmiths) discussing 'Fanaticism', David Cunningham on the 'Theory of the Novel, Evan Calder Williams on 'Hostile Objects', and Andrew McGettigan offering a critical overview of government education policy. External events have included papers given in Russia, Greece, Croatia, and at the Universities of Brighton, Nottingham, and Sussex.
