David Heaton

Head of Product Design

David Heaton, Head of Product Design, joined the University in November 2017.

David has a first degree in Industrial Design from Cardiff and gained an MA in Product Design from Birmingham. He has lectured in Product Design for over 20 years, latterly at the School of Engineering within Manchester Metropolitan University. David has previous experience of successfully developing new Product Design courses within an engineering and design environment.

Prior to his lecturing career David was a practicing Product Designer and Design Manager working for companies that ranged from specialist plastics manufacturers to international automotive manufactures.

David also set up and ran a successful Industrial Design consultancy for several years specialising in plastic injection moulded household products for a number of established and widely recognised national and international brands/companies.

During his career in industry David was actively involved in collaborating with educational partners, which led him to develop his professional career as a lecturer teaching Product/Engineering Design and Design Education. David has used his experience within industry to develop links with manufacturers and generate ‘live projects’ with a range of companies providing students with opportunities to pitch product ideas to real clients.

David has a particular interest in environmental design and its application in the development of new products. David also produces hand crafted wood objects that he shows in a number of established Galleries across the UK, these items represent the strong relationship between craft and design and individual and batch production.

David teaches across all aspects of the Product and Engineering Design programmes and places a particularly strong emphasis on concept thinking, idea generation, sketching, prototyping, ergonomics, product user interface, environmental issues, material and manufacturing methods and techniques.

David is a strong believer in providing students with the best possible learning experience to ensure they develop and achieve their maximum potential as fully rounded problem solvers ready for successful careers in design and engineering.
