Jane Lomax

Head of Sports Coaching Area | +44 (0) 1243 816316

My current role involves me heading up the Area of Coaching within the Institute of Sport. I line manage a group of colleagues, convene meetings, monitor workloads, facilitate discussions to develop ideas for the provision of sports coaching within the Institute, and liaise with other area heads to support development plans. Within this remit, I aim to facilitate discussions within the team, encourage all members to have a voice and an opportunity to develop as we explore and expand the provision of coaching within the degree programmes and beyond. This includes enhancing placement and community links with the potential to support coach development and mentoring in the local area through a ‘Coaching Hub’ based here at the university. My role includes developing the academic aspects of sport coaching and encourage growth of coaching related research. To this end I am currently engaged in a professional doctorate programme of study comparing and contrasting netball coach education and development system, and working with the International Netball Federation, which is directly impacting on the ideas behind degree programme content and delivery.

I programme co-ordinate the M.Sc. Sports Coaching programme, and temporarily am also running the new BSc Sport Coaching programme. I am module co-ordinator for 5 undergraduate and 2 masters modules currently, which is likely to move to 4 masters modules and 2 undergraduate ones as the new programme run out. I teach on undergraduate and masters programmes delivering sport psychology related modules, coaching practice and practical modules. I also support the University Netball club.
